A Crash Course in Staying Crash-Free: Motor vehicle accidents remain the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, per the CDC. With teen drivers ages 16–19 facing a fatal crash rate nearly three times higher than adults, traffic safety education is more important than ever.

The South Texas Health System Trauma & Critical Care Institute recently partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation Pharr District and the Edinburg Police Department to educate local students during a Traffic Safety Summer Camp at the UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

More than 50 high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in hands-on learning experiences, including a rollover simulation, education on trauma injuries related to crashes and interactive demonstrations using fatal vision alcohol impairment goggles.

This camp plays a vital role in empowering teens in our surrounding communities with the knowledge and awareness needed to make safer choices behind the wheel, helping prevent tragedies before they happen.

A special thank you to the Edinburg PD and the TxDOT Pharr District for the opportunity to educate and engage with the next generation of drivers!

Building a Stronger Foundation: Spine health plays a critical role in overall wellness, mobility and quality of life.

Broadcast live via STHS page, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., on Tuesday, June 16, the webinar will provide valuable insights on maintaining a healthy spine, along with practical strategies to help reduce back and neck pain. Behind the Silence: Men & Mental Health: In the U.S., men face a silent mental health crisis. Each year, more than 6 million men experience depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, while about 12.5 million live with an anxiety disorder.

Men are also more likely to misuse drugs and alcohol, with nearly three-quarters of deaths from excessive drinking occurring among men.

Mental health can look different in men, often showing through external behaviors rather than emotional expression. Common warning signs include:

😠 Anger & aggression
🫣 Avoidance
🥃 Substance misuse
🤕 Physical complaints
🫨 Risk-taking behavior

If you’re struggling, help is available. Mental health professionals can provide guidance, coping strategies and personalized treatment. For a confidential assessment, call the STHS Behavioral hotline at 956-388-1300, available 24/7.

Bringing the A-Game to Every Call, Real or Simulated: Proper training is essential for first responders, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to act quickly and effectively in life-threatening situations.

Dr. Mike Menowsky, MD, FACEP, Program Director of the South Texas Health System GME Consortium's Emergency Medicine Residency Program, recently served as a guest judge at the Trauma Regional Advisory Council - V's EMS Simulation Competition, held at South Texas College's Health Science Professions Campus.

The event brought together EMS agencies from across the Rio Grande Valley for a hands-on, simulation-based competition focused on clinical excellence, teamwork and preparedness. Using advanced labs, manikins and simulation technology, participants navigated highly realistic emergency scenarios designed to test critical thinking, communication and life-saving skills in fast-paced environments that mirror real-world emergency care.

STHS is proud to support initiatives like this that strengthen emergency response across our region. Thank you to the TRAC-V and all participating agencies for making this impactful event possible.

Advancing Equality in Healthcare for Every Patient: Pride Month is a time to honor the LGBTQ+ community, celebrate its history and achievements and recognize the importance of inclusive, compassionate care for all.

Yet, more than half of LGBTQ+ patients report experiencing discrimination in healthcare settings, according to the Human Rights Campaign, underscoring the ongoing need for safe, affirming environments.

Everyone deserves access to high-quality care, regardless of who they love or how they identify. That commitment means providing equitable, respectful treatment whenever and wherever care is needed.

This Pride Month, South Texas Health System proudly reaffirms its dedication to fostering welcoming, inclusive spaces across all 12 facilities, ensuring every patient receives the compassionate, dignified care they deserve.

Together, let’s continue building a culture of inclusion, not just during Pride Month, but every day of the year.
