There is a lot of research behind the foods that we eat. While medication is a very helpful tool for a lot of families, changing diets can also be very helpful.

What children eat directly affects their brain and behavior. Research shows that eliminating processed foods from their diets can reduce ADHD symptoms by 53%, even without medication or therapy. This highlights the significant influence of nutrition on the developing nervous system.

Processed foods often contain sugar, additives, and preservatives that impact attention, impulse control, and emotional regulation. These substances can overstimulate neural circuits, making it harder for children to focus, manage behavior, and self-regulate emotions.

By switching to whole, nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins parents provide essential vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that support neurotransmitter function and healthy brain signaling. This helps the nervous system function efficiently, improving attention, emotional balance, and impulse control.

Parents can make practical changes by gradually reducing processed snacks and meals and replacing them with healthier alternatives. Consistent healthy eating habits create long-term benefits for cognitive and emotional development. Simple dietary changes can be a powerful tool to help children with ADHD strengthen focus, reduce hyperactivity, and support overall brain and body health without relying solely on medications or therapies.

Camp Riley offers 8 sessions running from late May through the end of July. These sessions are designed for youth 8 – 18 with physical and cognitive diagnoses. Camps are run in partnership with Riley Children’s Foundation and Riley Children’s Hospital at IU Health. Costs per week are $400, however due to generous funding from Riley Children’s Foundation they can offer any amount of financial assistance needed.

Overnight and Day Camps offer 2 sessions each including day or overnight options. These sessions occur late June and mid July and are designed for youth 9 – 14. Activities include fishing, archery, climbing, arts & crafts, and more.

Camp Riley has been offering camps for children with physical and cognitive diagnoses since 1955. Funded by Riley Children's Foundation and supported by Riley Hospital for Children, Camp Riley provides a barrier-free environment that empowers each of our campers.
