🔄 The ‘Why’ Behind the Way: Replacement Behaviors

You can’t just stop a behavior without teaching a new one—otherwise, you leave a ‘behavioral vacuum.’ If a child hits because they need a break, simply saying ‘stop hitting’ doesn’t solve their underlying problem: they still need that break!

That’s why we teach a Replacement Behavior—like signing for ‘break’ or saying ‘help.’ By giving them a communication tool that is easier and more effective than hitting, we empower them to meet their needs peacefully.
