A recent study published in the journal Nutrients demonstrated something important:

Daily consumption of extra virgin olive oil significantly lowered systolic blood pressure, while refined olive oil did not show the same benefit.

Researchers believe the difference comes largely from polyphenols — naturally occurring antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds found in higher concentrations in extra virgin olive oil.

Participants who consumed approximately four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily experienced reductions in blood pressure without the use of medication.
