Varicose or spider veins? They can look and feel different. Varicose veins tend to be larger, raised, and rope-like, and they may bring aching or heaviness. Spider veins are smaller, sit closer to the surface, and can often serve as a source of discomfort and itching. Research published in Circulation estimates that about 23% of US adults have varicose veins (Source: American Heart Association, Circulation, 2014). Not sure which you are seeing? A short evaluation can help you understand your options.

Tired legs at the end of the day can be normal, and sometimes they can hint at a vein issue. A few signs worth noticing: heaviness or aching by evening, swelling around the ankles, visible bulging veins, night-time leg cramps, and skin changes near the ankle. One symptom on its own may mean little, but a pattern can be worth a conversation. If this sounds familiar, consider a vein evaluation with our team.

A wound that is not healing is not something to wait out.

For anyone living with diabetes, peripheral artery disease, or chronic venous insufficiency, even a small cut or blister may become a serious problem faster than expected. Reduced circulation and nerve sensitivity may mean the wound is further along than it looks or feels.

If you notice a sore, cut, or ulcer that has not shown clear signs of healing within a week or two, here are the immediate steps that may help while you arrange care:

1. Clean gently with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh antiseptics that may damage fragile tissue.
2. Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing to protect the area from contamination.
3. Contact a vascular specialist promptly. Determining whether the underlying cause is arterial or venous is critical to choosing the right treatment path.

Do not wait to see if it improves on its own. Visit https://www.ascentvascular.com/ to book your appointment today!

Think you know your vascular anatomy? Let's find out!

This particular vessel is the main highway of your entire circulatory system. It carries oxygen-rich blood from your heart and branches out to supply nearly every part of your body, including your abdomen and legs. When it becomes blocked or begins to enlarge, the consequences may be life-threatening.

Answer: C. The Aorta.

Blockages and aneurysms involving the aorta are conditions we take seriously at Ascent Vascular Specialists. If you have risk factors or a family history of vascular disease, a screening may be one of the most important conversations you can have.

A wound on your leg or ankle that refuses to heal is rarely just a skin problem. In most cases, it is a signal from the vascular system that something deeper needs attention.

Venous ulcers, which are among the most common type of non-healing lower leg wounds, typically develop after years of untreated Chronic Venous Insufficiency. As pressure builds in the leg veins over time, the skin and tissue may gradually break down, creating wounds that may become infected, expand, and in severe cases, lead to more serious complications.

Treatment requires addressing both the wound itself and the underlying circulation problem. That may involve compression therapy, advanced wound dressings, and a minimally invasive procedure to close the diseased vein and restore healthy blood flow.

If you or someone you care for has a wound that has been slow to heal, please do not delay. Early intervention may make a significant difference in outcomes. Call Ascent Vascular Specialists to schedule a wound evaluation today.

That number may be surprising, but it reflects something our team sees regularly: Chronic Venous Insufficiency that goes unaddressed long enough tends to do real damage to the skin and tissue of the lower leg.

CVI is not simply a cosmetic issue. When the valves inside the veins stop working properly, blood pools in the lower legs over time. That persistent pressure may eventually break down the skin, leading to painful, slow-healing ulcers that are difficult to treat once they develop.

The encouraging part is that CVI is very treatable, especially when it is caught before complications arise. Minimally invasive procedures may close off the damaged vein and redirect blood flow to healthier vessels, often with little to no downtime.

It is a question we hear a lot this time of year, and the answer comes down to how heat affects vein function.

When temperatures rise, blood vessels naturally dilate in order to help the body release heat. In healthy veins, this is managed efficiently. But in veins with damaged or weakened valves, that extra dilation may make it even harder for blood to move back up toward the heart against gravity. The result is increased fluid pooling in the lower legs, which may feel like heaviness, tightness, or visible swelling by the end of the day.

A few habits that may help during the warmer months:
- Wear compression stockings, especially on longer days
- Elevate your legs for 15 to 20 minutes in the evening
- Stay well hydrated, as dehydration may worsen circulation
- Avoid prolonged standing or sitting without movement breaks

If summer heat is consistently making your symptoms worse, it may be time to discuss treatment options. Visit https://www.ascentvascular.com/ to book your appointment today!

It is a common assumption, and it keeps a lot of people from seeking the right care.

While heart and kidney conditions may certainly contribute to swelling, most cases of isolated leg edema, swelling that appears in one or both legs without other systemic symptoms, are actually caused by venous insufficiency. That means the tiny valves inside the leg veins are not closing properly, allowing blood and fluid to pool in the lower extremities rather than returning efficiently to the heart.

The good news is that venous insufficiency is one of the more treatable conditions we see. A non-invasive ultrasound evaluation may help us identify the root cause quickly and map out a treatment plan that actually addresses the problem rather than just managing the symptoms.

Swollen legs deserve a real answer. Visit https://www.ascentvascular.com/ to book your appointment today!

From everyone at Ascent Vascular Specialists, we wish you and your family a safe and joyful Fourth of July!

If you are spending the day outdoors, a few things may help keep your legs feeling their best: stay well hydrated, take breaks to sit and elevate your feet if you are on them for long stretches, and wear your compression if it has been recommended. Summer heat may cause veins to dilate and symptoms to flare, so a little extra care on a busy day goes a long way.

Enjoy every moment of it. We will be here when you need us.
