Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001, but the lives lost, the courage shown, and the countless acts of selflessness that followed remain in our hearts.

Today, we pause to remember those who never came home, the families whose lives were forever changed, and the first responders and ordinary citizens who stepped forward when they were needed most.

25 years later, we remember.

On September 9, 1776, the Continental Congress officially began using “United States of America” in place of “United Colonies.”

It was a small change in wording with a much bigger meaning: thirteen individual colonies were beginning to identify themselves as one united nation.

250 years later, it’s a name recognized around the world.

You may have noticed that vehicles traveling in a funeral procession often have their headlights on, even in the middle of the day.

The reason is simple: headlights help other drivers recognize that the vehicles are traveling together as part of a funeral procession. Depending on state and local laws, funeral processions may also receive certain right-of-way considerations.

If you encounter a funeral procession on the road, a little patience can go a long way. Allowing the vehicles to remain together is a small gesture of respect for a family accompanying their loved one to their final place of rest.

Sometimes, the simplest acts of courtesy can mean more than we realize.

Deanna Mary Mercer Faas, aged 82, went home to be with the Lord on September 3, 2026, at Southbrooke Manor Nursing Home in Edna, Texas surrounded by her loving family. Born on August 14, 1944, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Her days were marked by a gentle spirit, a generous heart, and a steadfast devotion to God and to those she cherished.

Deanna was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Mercer, Gladys Mercer Lastovica, and stepfather, Joseph Lastovica. Her sister Brenda Milliken, and Brenda’s husband, Chuck Milliken. Her brother-in-law Chuck Smith. Their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.

She is survived by her sisters, Lucille Smith, Rose Ann Cook and her husband Pat, and Carol Bartek and her husband Gary.

Deanna is survived by her daughter, Tina Richardson, and her partner James; and by her sons, Brian Seaman and his wife Diane, and Douglas Seaman and his wife Sherry. Her children were her greatest joy, and she carried each of them in her heart with unwavering love.

She was blessed with five grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her life: Tessa Blaylock, Derek Gonzalez, Cody Seaman, Shelby Seaman, and Grace Seaman. She cherished every moment spent with them and held each one close to her heart.

Her legacy continued through her six great‑grandchildren: Bradley Winzenried, Ashlynn Winzenried, Christopher Pustjovsky, Bransen Blaylock, Rio Gonzalez, and Jackson Seaman. Each one brought light, laughter, and warmth into her later years.

She was further blessed to welcome a great‑great‑grandchild, Beckett Winzenried, whose arrival brought her immeasurable joy and completed five generations of love within her family.

Family will receive friends from 10 AM - 11 AM on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at the Wheeler Funeral Home Chapel, where the Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11 AM. Did you know the Civil War had a major influence on modern funeral practices in the United States?

While embalming had existed in other cultures for centuries, its widespread use in America began during the Civil War. Many soldiers died far from home, and embalming made it possible to preserve their bodies for the journey back to their families.

After President Abraham Lincoln was embalmed following his death, public awareness and acceptance of the practice grew even more. Over time, embalming became a more common part of funeral service in the United States and continues to be used today when families choose it.
