Inspired to Make a Difference

Meet UMC ICU Registered Nurse, Julianne Herrera.

While completing her prerequisites for nursing school, Julianne's grandmother suffered a stroke. Witnessing her grandmother's journey inspired Julianne to pursue her career in neuroscience nursing.

Experiencing every stage of her grandmother's recovery gave Julianne a deep understanding of the challenges and triumphs stroke patients face.

Today, she brings that compassion and firsthand perspective to her role in UMC's Neuro ICU.

"It's been amazing being on this side and caring for stroke patients and seeing the process from them going to the ICU and then going to rehab," Julianne said.

Experience & Education:

• Two years of experience in Cardiac Catheterization,
Interventional Radiology, or Neuro Intervention required.
• Current Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT) with

Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or Cardiovascular

Congratulations to our 2026 Second Quarter DAISY Award winners: Rodsy Muñoz Flores, RN II Critical Care, Surgical/Telemetry; Lauren Harper, Cert. RN II-CC, ICU; and Isabel Tellez Herrera, RN II, Critical Care, ICU.

The DAISY Award is given to extraordinary nurses in honor of the outstanding work they do. They are nominated by patients who received care at our hospital.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, and it was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of an autoimmune disease.

These recipients demonstrate exceptional compassionate care for our patients.

Beauty, Strength, and Hope 💗

UMC is honored to be a part of the Power of Pink community initiative that brings together area hospitals, nonprofits, and local foundations to honor breast cancer survivors in El Paso.

Leticia Herrera Lopez, a cancer patient at UMC and participant in the Power of Pink Makeover event, shared that looking your best can help you feel better on the inside, even while facing difficult challenges.

"It's a way to take care of someone because this disease is a lot. So, it's a way for UMC to take care of us," Leticia said.

UMC is proud to celebrate these incredible women and their courage.

They were our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and loved ones. As these names are spoken, we remember the lives behind them and the place they continue to hold in our hearts and in our community.

Today, we remember the neighbors, friends, and loved ones we lost on Aug. 3, 2019.

Though seven years have passed, they are not forgotten. Their memory remains woven into the fabric of our community as we continue to heal together.

This day brings heaviness and sadness to our hearts, but it also reminds us of the unity, compassion, and strength that carried our beautiful city through one of its darkest days and continue to define us as El Pasoans.

Today, on the seventh anniversary of Aug. 3, 2019, we are reminded that the strength of El Paso has always been found in its people.

We continue to lift one another up as our community heals.

Over the past seven days, we have shared the stories of UMC Associates and how that day continues to impact and guide them today.

Today, we share the story of Alejandra Carzoli and how her experience inspired her to help others heal from trauma.

On Aug. 3, Alejandra was working as a charge nurse in UMC's Emergency Department.

She recalls a man trying to open the doors of the ambulance bay that Saturday morning. He was an off-duty officer who had driven a patient from the shooting to the hospital.

The experience remained with her long after the immediate crisis had passed and ultimately solidified her decision to pursue a career in mental health, leading her to return to school just one year later.

“After Aug. 3, I realized there's a lot of aftermath when people live through something so traumatic. That's what made me make the final decision that I wanted to work with people who have PTSD or underlying mental health problems,” she said.

Today, Alejandra is a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

“When I see my patients and they have memories that hurt, I have empathy,” she said.

Her experience on Aug. 3 gave her a deeper understanding of how trauma can stay with people long after an event is over, affecting individuals, families, and entire communities.

“You start talking about it, and it just brings up feelings. Being a frontliner, it hurts. I can't imagine what the family members who were there that day feel.”
