One of the hardest things to understand in trauma recovery is that fear doesn't always look like fear.
Sometimes it looks like pushing people away.
Sometimes it looks like shutting down.
Sometimes it looks like picking a fight over something small.
Sometimes it looks like leaving before someone has the chance to leave you.
To the outside world, it can seem confusing.
To a wounded nervous system, it can feel like self-protection.
The tragedy of trauma isn't that people don't want love.
It's that love can feel unfamiliar... and what is unfamiliar can feel unsafe.
The beautiful part of healing is that our nervous system can learn something new.
That not every disagreement ends in abandonment.
That not every vulnerable moment ends in betrayal.
That not every open hand is reaching to hurt us.
Healing doesn't happen the moment we find safe people.
It happens when we slowly begin to believe that safety is possible.
And sometimes...
That first step is allowing ourselves to stay when every part of us wants to run.
