Over the last couple of days, I had the privilege of spending some time around a handful of veterans involved with the War Horse for Veterans program.
I got to share a dinner with them, listen to stories, and watch them simply enjoy being around horses and a lifestyle that many of us in this industry are fortunate enough to live every day.
It was humbling.
I can’t begin to understand the battles some of these men have faced, nor could I pretend to understand what they carry with them. But I got to witness something that was pretty special.
I watched them work cattle, take something difficult, figure it out, and experience the frustration, accomplishment, joy, and pride that comes with it. For a little while, the horse they rode and the cow in front of them was all that mattered.
It made me stop and appreciate just how fortunate I am to live the life I do.
Working with horses can be hard. The hours are long, the work is physical, and some days leave you exhausted. But watching someone experience that same hard work through a completely different lens reminded me that what we sometimes take for granted can be an incredible gift to someone else.
I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with horses. I’m grateful for the people and lifestyle this industry has brought into my life. And I’m especially grateful for the chance to spend a little time with people who have sacrificed more than most of us will ever understand.
Sometimes a horse has a way of helping people find a little peace, a little confidence, or a little piece of themselves again.
This weekend was a good reminder not to take any of it for granted.
