Yesterday was Veterinary Appreciation Day, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t take a moment to recognize Dr. Rice.

In just two hours of appointments, Dr. Rice cared for enough patients to fill her arms with charts. Each board represents a pet, an owner, a question answered, a treatment plan, or a problem solved.

Thank you, Dr. Rice, for the care, dedication, and long hours you invest in our community’s animals every day. ❤️🐾

Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases we see in veterinary medicine, and it’s also one of the most preventable.

Think you know the answer? Drop your guess in the comments before you scroll. 👇

You might be surprised to know that confirmed cases of rabies do occasionally occur in northeast Georgia. It is most common in wild animals including bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes, but any stray or unvaccinated pet is susceptible. Because of the seriousness of the disease, owned cats and dogs are required by law to be vaccinated.

Rabies CAN infect any mammal although small rodents and rabbits are rarely affected. Keeping your pet's rabies vaccine current is highly effective at protecting them. And once symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal.

Whether your pet spends most of their time indoors or outdoors, staying up to date on rabies vaccination is one of the simplest ways to protect them and your family.

From wellness visits to vaccine appointments, ACVS is proud to care for pets, horses, and livestock across Elbert County and Northeast Georgia. Call 706-283-2761 to schedule an appointment.

Have you seen posts about New World Screwworm? It's not actually worm but rather fly larvae that causes serious health issues. Currently, several locations in Mexico are reporting cases in livestock and dogs.

It has NOT been detected in Georgia.

However, in light of recent cases in other parts of the US, we are being vigilant in checking all wounds. The Georgia Department of Agriculture is encouraging livestock and pet owners to be familiar with the signs and report suspected cases promptly.

Watch for:
• Draining or enlarging wounds
• Maggots or egg masses in wounds
• Signs of discomfort
• Lesions in body openings (nose, ears, genitalia, umbilical area)

If you notice a wound that is worsening, contains maggots, or is not healing normally, contact Dr. Rice and staff at 706-283-2761.

Suspected NWS cases should also be reported to the Georgia Department of Agriculture Animal Health Division at 404-656-3667.
