I know many SLPs are unhappy with ASHA right now and are choosing to drop their membership and rightfully so. But here’s another issue that deserves some attention:

If you are a practicing, licensed SLP without the CCC, ASHA does not allow you to purchase membership-only access.

That means if you want access to journals or voting rights, you are required to purchase an optional proprietary product (the CCC) in order to become a member. The membership-only option ($90) is not available to practicing SLPs.

Think about that for a second.

OTs and PTs can join their professional associations without purchasing a separate certification product. Heck, you can even become a member of AOTA as a non-OT member. But ASHA restricts access to professional resources and participation unless you also buy the CCC.

Reducing access to journals and member resources by tying them to an expensive certification product does not help our field.

ASHA claims the CCC is important because it “represents a uniform, national benchmark for clinical preparation and ongoing professional development, regardless of where a clinician practices.”

But ongoing professional development is already required to maintain our state licenses.

That excuse is not good enough for me, and it shouldn’t be good enough for you either.

If this concerns you, continue pushing the conversation forward. Reach out to the Board of Directors through the ASHA In Touch forms or email [email protected] and ask why practicing licensed SLPs are excluded from membership-only access.

Drop a 💜 in the comments if you’ve reached out to ASHA.
