Newly-emerging research is indicating that the age of smartphone acquisition is associated with adolescent health outcomes.

A new study of adolescents co-authored by Children and Screens National Scientific Advisory Board member Ran Barzilay, MD, PhD, found that owning a smartphone at age 13 was linked to insufficient sleep a year later. The study also found that greater smartphone usage at age 14 increased the likelihood of teens experiencing depression, obesity, and insufficient sleep.

A previous study by Barzilay and others had linked smartphone ownership by age 12 with mental health and sleep problems a year later.
