Located in Elizabeth City, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center is a 182 licensed bed, full service facility offering a wide range of services, including: inpatient and critical care, a full array of surgical services, sophisticated diagnostic imaging technology, comprehensive women’s care, cardiology, cancer treatment, rehabilitation services and more. Sentara Albemarle Medical Center has assembled a medical staff of more than 100 physicians, representing nearly 30 specialties, and a caring staff of almost 1,000 employees.

Words simply can't describe the loss we feel.

Willie Mae Overton, age 87, passed away on Tuesday, September 1. She dedicated 65 years of service to Sentara Albemarle and continued giving back as a volunteer long after her retirement.

Whether you were a patient, visitor, or team member, chances are you were greeted by her smile, kindness, humor, and willingness to help. As a volunteer, Miss Willie could often be found in the hospital lobby, welcoming visitors and watching for anyone who might need a helping hand. If she saw someone arriving who appeared to need assistance, she was quick to meet them with a wheelchair and a warm smile.

While it is hard to imagine our hospital without Miss Willie, her spirit and legacy will live on through the countless lives she touched. Please share your memories of Willie below. 💙

They oversee five hospitals, talk "80 times a day," and are moms.

Meet Dana Weston Graves and Joanne Inman, the two women leading Sentara's Southeast market, including our hospital. Together, they're rewriting the playbook on what collaborative healthcare leadership can look like.

"We no longer think about our hospitals as standalone facilities," Graves said. "If Virginia Beach is facing a challenge, Norfolk is facing the same and vice versa. It's all one Southeast market, serving a community that moves across city lines."

What makes a rural community hospital stand out in today's healthcare landscape?

At Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, the answer is simple: meaningful connections, a strong sense of community and the opportunity to make a real difference in patients' lives.

Over the past year, 25 new providers have joined the team, helping expand access to care across northeastern North Carolina. From primary care to specialty services, these clinicians are choosing Albemarle not only for our state-of-the-art facility, but for the relationships they build with patients and the impact they can make in the community. 💙

One year ago, we opened the doors to the new Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. Today, we're celebrating the people, the milestones, and impact that made our first year one to remember. 💙

Since then, we've cared for thousands of patients, welcomed 25 new providers, and celebrated achievements that reflect the dedication of our incredible team. From earning Magnet with Distinction recognition for nursing excellence to receiving awards for stroke, heart attack, and maternity care, our first year in this new space has been filled with meaningful milestones.

One year ago, we opened the doors to our new hospital, building on a legacy of care that spans more than 110 years in our community.💙

In our first year, we:

🚑 Cared for 41,743 emergency patients
👶 Delivered 379 babies
🩺 Performed 4,675 surgeries
🔬 Completed 11,599 CT and MRI scans
❤️ Conducted 89 cardiac catheterizations
