⚾️☀️ A Week of Baseball, Heat, and Type 1 Diabetes Success ☀️⚾️

This past week tested just about every variable that can impact blood sugars.

🔥 Long days in the sun
⚾️ Multiple baseball games on a different schedule than normal
🦞 A diet consisting mostly of seafood
💉 Running primarily off basal insulin

Yet through all of it, my Type 1 son had incredible blood sugar control.

Were there a few rises? Absolutely. Heat, adrenaline, excitement, and competition can all cause blood sugars to climb, even during intense physical activity. But those occasional spikes were easily managed with about ½ unit or less of diluted Novolog.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is to focus on controlling the variables we can control. We can’t control the weather, the heat, the adrenaline rush of a big play, or changes in schedule. But we can control things like insulin adjustments, diluting insulin for more precise dosing, and the foods we choose to fuel his body.

Those decisions make a huge difference. This week wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable if I had spent every day chasing high blood sugars and every night treating lows. Instead, we were able to spend our time making memories, watching baseball, enjoying great seafood, and letting him simply be a kid.

As a mom, watching him play hard, have fun, and enjoy life while maintaining such great control is something I’ll never take for granted.

Type 1 diabetes doesn’t take vacations, even at the ballfield. But with preparation, experience, and consistency, it doesn’t have to keep kids from doing what they love either.

This week was a reminder that even with heat, sports, travel, and schedule changes, good blood sugar management is possible when you focus on the things within your control.

Diabetes can feel overwhelming, especially when it seems like nothing is working or every day is a battle.

Through years of experience, we’ve learned that small adjustments can make a tremendous difference. If you’re feeling lost, frustrated, or unsure where to start, please reach out. Sometimes having someone who understands the challenges, can share practical strategies, and help you focus on the variables you can control can make all the difference. There is hope, and better blood sugar management is possible. 💙
