"I was feeling better, and now it hurts more."
This is something I hear from many patients around 4–5 weeks after shoulder surgery, and it can be frustrating when it feels like you're moving backward instead of forward.
In many cases, two things are happening:
• You're not sleeping well, and poor sleep can make pain feel much worse.
• You're starting to feel more confident, so you're moving the shoulder more and doing more activities than you were during the first few weeks.
That doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Recovery isn't always a straight line, and temporary increases in discomfort are often part of the healing process.
In this video, I explain why this stage of recovery can be challenging and what patients should expect.
