Collyard Chiropractic Collyard Chiropractic is your family practitioner...treating infant to elderly with chiropractic care

Collyard Chiropractic, PA was founded by Dr. Carrie Collyard-Glinsek in 2001 and joined by Dr. Erick Thompson in 2020. It is Collyard Chiro's vision to help people naturally and offer more diverse and comprehensive care to achieve patient's ultimate health goals. Depending on the circumstance of the patient, sometimes chiropractic adjustments in conjunction with massage therapy alone can be the an

swer, but in some cases additional holistic treatments such as acupuncture, essential oils, nutritional and herbal supplements can help where traditional medicine has not. Beyond just in-office treatments, Dr. Carrie and Dr. Erick also believe strongly in educating patients not only about what they can do to help you but how you can help yourself to stay healthy, naturally.

Fun Friday Fact.
Dr Carrie is an Elk River Area Chamber of Commerce ambassador which gives her the opportunity to represent our business community at cool things like the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting at the new Otsego Costco. Our community continues to evolve and it is important we continue to evolve with it. This is how we stay connected and relevant in our little community as things change. Thanks, Doc!

"I say, quite often, "The worst part about mowing the lawn is getting off the couch to mow the lawn."

Once I start mowing, there's a peace that comes with getting lost in my thoughts, listening to music and completing the task. I use that analogy when discussing working out with my patients as well. In fact, I say the same thing about going to the gym. The worst part is getting to the gym.

I wrote my book in an attempt to make that hurdle more scalable. There are 10 starting points in the book (more if you dissect them a bit) for you to choose from with the intention that whichever you choose becomes a jumping off point.

Get one hurdle handled, make it a consistent habit, and then when you're ready choose your 'next adventure' from the list. If you're not doing anything presently to take control of your health, make the hurdle as small as possible.

Start with 5 push-ups a day, or start with cutting sugary beverages out of your diet, or start with ensuring you're getting better sleep. Eventually, your progress becomes motivation for the next change.

The beauty of the premise is that if you do nothing more for a year than a 20-minute walk once a day or take 5 minutes in the morning to center yourself, after a year, you are that much further ahead of yourself than if you had done nothing at all. "

"I've been seeing a lot of people who have hurt themselves lifting things, both in their upper back and their lower back. I see lifting injuries throughout the year, but different complaints seem to ebb and flow in terms of prevalence.

When I was in my 20s, I would regularly carry three cases of paper (approximately 50 lbs each) at a time to save time... now that I'm writing this, maybe that contributed to my upper back complaints when I was in my 30s... I digress.

We tend to do silly things in our youth, and it isn't until we're older that we start being mindful about our lifting techniques. But even in our wiser years, many times the heavy lifts aren't what cause the injuries.

It's cleaning up the sticks in the yard carelessly after spending the day cutting up a tree and moving the logs around. The heavy lifting fatigues us, and the improper form with the lighter stuff causes our back to give way.

Another common one is grabbing a backpack, diaper bag, or briefcase out of the passenger seat or from the back of the car. Or lifting our children playfully, thus not being careful.

This is a shorter post, just a public service announcement. Proper lifting form isn't just for the heavy stuff. Being mindful will always lower your risk of injury." - Dr. Erick Thompson

"As many of you know, Dr. Carrie and I do leg length checks as a part of our appointment. I can't speak for Dr. Carrie, but I will occasionally be asked the purpose of the leg check. I actually find it quite interesting, so I thought it might be a fun topic.

The leg length is almost never what is considered anatomical. That is, one leg isn't shorter due to the bones of one leg being longer. It does happen, but it is rare. Typically it's what we call a functional leg length.

When you're lying face-down and I check your pelvis, I may find that the back of your left pelvic bone is sitting higher, compared to your right. What I don't know, automatically, is whether that is because your left pelvis is rotated forward or your right is rotated back. The leg length indicates which side is being affected, making it a test of laterality. When you lie prone, it pulls on muscles that affect the hip joint, like the quadriceps and TFL, or the glutes and hamstring depending on which side is being affected. That, in turn, indicates the direction the pelvis is rotated. So if your right pelvis looks higher than left and the right leg is short, I have more certainty about how that pelvic bone needs to be moved.

When we bend the knees, it pulls on the piriformis and other tendons around the sacrum, which then helps indicate which direction the sacral apex (recall when I wrote about the sacrum a few weeks ago) is pointing so we then know where to put our driving forces with regard to that.

Like I said, the kinetic chain is quite interesting to me and it is a conversation I have with enough regularity that I thought it would be fun to write about. " - Dr. Erick Thompson
