GBC-NORCAT MST’s Augmented Reality Fire Extinguisher Training uses FiAR technology to create realistic fire scenarios while allowing participants to safely practice extinguisher selection, technique, and decision-making in a controlled environment.

Making a mistake in mining can have serious consequences.

Choosing the wrong cable during a hoisting or rigging task can damage equipment, disrupt operations, and put people at risk.

That’s where virtual reality can add another layer to training.

At the GBC-NORCAT Mine Skills Training facility in Elko, miners can practice heavy hoisting and rigging scenarios in an immersive virtual environment—without exposing people or equipment to real-world hazards.

That's why our MSHA Surface New Miner 24-Hour course includes hands-on emergency response training, giving participants the chance to practice CPR skills in a realistic learning environment.

While CPR is just one part of the program, it reflects the goal of the entire course: preparing new miners to recognize hazards, respond with confidence, and make safe decisions from day one on the job.

Travis Macias used to be the new guy on a mine site, double checking his harness, hoping he hadn't missed anything. Thirty years later, he's the guy new hires are looking at, hoping they're doing it right.

The difference? Now he's standing beside them, showing them how.

Travis learned mining the hard way: one shift at a time, one lesson at a time, and sometimes one close call at a time. So when NORCAT-GBC MST built the Entry Level Miner program in Elko, he didn't just agree to teach it. He helped shape it around the things he wishes someone had taught him on day one.

Eleven courses in two weeks. Gear checks. Fall protection. Confined spaces. The stuff that sounds basic until you're the one 40 feet up without it.

What makes it stick isn't the curriculum, though. It's Travis.

He's not reading off a slide but telling new miners what he actually saw go wrong and what he'd do differently.

That's the difference between training someone and preparing them.
