On World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we're highlighting the important role hospice and palliative care play in helping patients and families navigate serious illness.

Both hospice and palliative care focus on comfort, quality of life and support, helping patients receive care that aligns with their goals and wishes. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and alongside treatment. Hospice care is typically chosen when treatment is no longer working or a patient decides to stop curative treatment for a terminal illness, shifting the focus to comfort, quality of life and support for both the patient and their loved ones.

At Amedisys we are thankful for our Physical Therapy team and their commitment to provide quality care. "I graduated in Dec. 2007 from Darton and after passing my boards Feb. 2008, there was no looking back. I truly LOVE Physical Therapy. To me, PT is a means that allows me to serve and give back to others. I get to help, love, and push people to get better. In return this is the most rewarding career. I've been a PTA for 12 years. I transferred to home health and Amedisys in 2016 and have been here for 4 1/2 years. Initially, I chose Amedisys and home health due to wanting to follow my long time mentor, Physical Therapist, and best friend, Deanna. We have always worked well together and sometimes that PT/PTA relationship can be difficult to replace. After making the switch, I saw home health as a new and exciting way to explore another realm of the PT world. Coming to Amedisys has provided me with an entire team of skilled staff members, including our amazing PT team, who are all dedicated to each and every patient we serve. I am grateful to work with every patient in their home. It allows me to be on a more personal level with my patient, focus on them individually, and be present for simple tasks they may not have help with (like reaching an object up too high or walking the trash to the hobo on my way out). Many of our patients at Amedisys and others over the years are like family due to our time together. We cheer, laugh, cry, scream, pray, and do whatever it takes to get thru any issue they are facing. I believe my best assets for our team are my compassion, thoroughness, and drive to help every patient succeed. My patients would say my best asset is my ability to be "mean" while still smiling at them. I am married to my best friend, Todd, with a total of four children. We have two dogs, two cats, a horse and ten chickens. Outside of work I enjoy camping, being outdoors, spending time with family/friends, reading, cheering on the kids in their activities, and of course spending time with all the animals. So thankful to be part of Amedisys and our A-team!" Thank you Melissa Shufflebarger for everything you do for our patients and our team.

Deanna Beamon has been a physical therapist for 15 years and obtained her doctorate of physical therapy from University of St. Augustine. She started her career at our local hospital and worked there for 11 years with nine of those years as Clinical Director. Deanna has been with Amedisys for 4.5 years and Physical Therapy to her means friend, cheerleader, and musculoskeletal specialist. Physical therapy provides a hands on approach to healing while helping others overcome functional obstacles and achieve their own goals they did not think were possible. She has been married for almost 12 years and has 5 beautiful children plus one dog, Brinley, who is also part of the family. She always has a project of some sort going whether it is remodeling or adding on to their home. As a family they enjoy camping, kayaking, and just about anything active or outdoors. Deanna was initially very skeptical about whether or not she would like home health after being in the hospital and oupatient setting for 11 years but can't see herself going back to those settings. She enjoys getting to know her patient on a more personal level, in their home and gets to see firsthand their daily struggles and help them to more independent. Deanna's strong work ethic is her best asset and is flexible with scheduling request. "I love being a therapist at Amedisys because of the reputation that goes along with it. We have a great team who all are dedicated to taking care of patients and keeping them out of the hospital as best as possible. Someone in my family has needed home health and without a second thought, we chose Amedisys. Amedisys is the A-Team!"

Every October we celebrate National Physical Therapy Month! Tabatha Houston returned to Amedisys a little over a year ago but has been with Amedisys for a total of 7 years. She is married to Jason for 10 years and they have a 5 year old daughter (Tatum) and 9 month old son (Jaxon). Her new hobby is camping and she enjoys selling Lularoe, kayaking and visiting National parks. She has been a Physical Therapist Assistant for 10.5 years. Physical Therapy to Tabatha is improving a person's movement, function and safety to allow them to reach their highest level of independence. She chose home health when a classmate shared a job opening at Amedisys and she has loved it from day one. She loves getting to know the patients and their families. She loves going into homes and seeing the setup individuals have to see how she can help improve their safety and remain in their home. Tabatha is a team player and strives to treat each patient as she would want her grandma or other family treated. She enjoys being a part of Amedisys because everyone strives to deliver the best care possible. Every clinician has the patient's best interest in mind and it shows. Thank you Tabatha for everything you do for your patients and our care center.

Not all heroes wear capes. This hero wears scrubs. Angie Wilson has been with Amedisys for 1 1/2 years and brings 25 years of nursing experience with a background in medical/surgical, emergency room and school nursing. She has 6 children, (4 girls and 2 boys) that she loves very much. Presently she is enjoying the planning of her son Dallas and his fiancee Ashleigh's wedding.
"Over the years, I have had people ask me " why did you become a nurse?" "Don't you get tired of sick people?" Here is the reason: Its my passion! I'm the eyes for the patient that can't see, I'm the ears for those who can't hear. I'm the advocate for the patient who is in pain, I'm the liaison between patient and doctor. I'm the teacher to patients and their families. I'm the child who feels alone after watching a parent die. I'm the voice when no one speaks. I'm the caregiver when no one seems to care. And last, I'm the one who thanks God every day for providing me with the knowledge and passion to be what I am. A Nurse."
Thank you Angie for being that special nurse. We are glad you part of our team.

Not all heroes wear capes. This hero wears scrubs! Ashley English has been with Amedisys for 12 years as our Clinical Manager. She brings 16 years of nursing experience to our care center with a background of cardiac unit, ER and CCU. She has 2 boys, Kaden (12) and Waylon (4) and an awesome husband.
" I chose nursing because I love to heal others and make them feel awesome even though sometimes they are going through a hardship health wise. Of course, there is nothing better than putting a smile on a patients face that is deserving after going through so much. We don’t always know what each patient has been through, but to know I may can give them a little peace of mind or bring joy to their life is the biggest blessing I could ever ask for. Although I loved working in the ER. CCU and on the cardiac unit, there is nothing better than home health. I chose home health because you actually get to spend quality time with your patients and their families. In the hospital, you just see the patient for a short term period, but in home health you get to know the patient and their family members and sometimes they become apart of your family and heart. My most memorable moments with patients have been in home health, even just a big hug can put the biggest smile on your patients face and it just warms my heart to know that I can brighten their day in their own home where they are the most comfortable. I love Amedisys because I know we have the best team here in Americus and I know all our clinicians have the passion and drive to improve our patients outcomes and touch each patient's heart. I wouldn’t want to be any where else, but right here at Amedisys Home Health of Americus 😊 Did I forget to mention my co-workers are a part of my family and I love them all, that’s what makes us the best home health in our area!"
Thank you Ashley for all your years of service and always striving for great outcomes with our patients. You are a true hero in my heart!

Our nurses are at the heart of everything we do at Amedisys. Denise Willis has been with Amedisys 10 years and brings 43 years of nursing experience to our care center. After graduation from nursing school in 1977, she worked 19 years in a nursing home setting, first as a staff nurse then as the Administrator. She followed with 10 years as a staff nurse at a small rural hospital working as ER nurse, medical/surgical nurse or whatever was needed. She also worked 5 years in home health before coming to Amedisys to serve on our Business Development team.
Denise has been married to Richard for 16 years and combined they have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
"I have always enjoyed nursing. I enjoy helping the elderly by helping them heal and enjoy the golden years as happy and healthy as possible. With my role at Amedisys, I am not hands on with patients but I do get to hear from physicians, rehabs, Assistive Living communities, and hospitals about the phenomenal work our clinicians perform every day. I guess being a nurse I understand their passion and compassion they have for our patients. I am extremely proud of our team."
