The Arc of Howard County

The Arc of Howard County Achieving full community inclusion for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Howard County offers a wide range of services for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and their families. We provide direct support and services that enable people to lead full and rich lives in their homes and in the community. Since 1961, The Arc has grown from a small group of parents to one of the county’s largest employers.

The Arc of Howard County was featured in Maryland Matters this week, and we want to share why it matters.

For more than two years, people we support have been losing their Medicaid coverage because of errors and delays at the state level. Not because their needs changed, but because of backlogs and a system struggling to keep up.

The impact is real. Since 2023, about 42 people we support have lost coverage at some point, and we believe we are owed nearly $400,000 in unpaid claims for care we have already provided. In one case, a man was wrongly dropped from his waiver and went nearly a year without coverage. We never considered walking away from him. We kept providing his care, and we are now looking at $130,000 to $140,000 we may have to absorb.

As our Executive Director, Katie Collins-Ihrke, said in the article, the state is shifting its costs onto providers, on top of budget cuts. And we are not alone. Providers across Maryland are owed millions for care they had no choice but to deliver.

We will always show up for the people we serve. But the state needs to fix this, so that people with developmental disabilities and the providers who care for them can count on a system that works.

Please share this post to help more people understand what families and providers across Maryland are facing.

After more than two years of erroneous Medicaid disenrollments, communication challenges and slow responses from state agencies, the nonprofits and companies providing developmental disability services say they are near a financial breaking point.

Our second-ever Value Award went to Rancy, pictured here with our Executive Director, Katie. Rancy was recognized for going above and beyond to help Adnan achieve his goals and land his very first job! After completing his regular responsibilities, Rancy made time to support Adnan through his new job training, putting his dedication and belief in the people he supports into action.

Thank you, Rancy, for helping make this milestone possible and putting The Arc’s mission into action!

Meet Frank and Dan. One of their favorite summer activities is enjoying a good old-fashioned crab feast together. There’s nothing better than great food, good company, and spending time with a friend! 🦀😊

Frank loves his life at The Arc. He especially appreciates the staff who support him and enjoys having a home of his own and his own private space, as well as a roommate. He loves going to the movies, taking vacations, visiting amusement parks, and bowling. Frank also appreciates that his Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) make sure he has time to go out with his girlfriend. He’s a big fan of all things horror and enjoys meeting new people and spending time with friends.

Dan equally appreciates the support he receives from The Arc. He loves that his DSPs support him in doing the things he enjoys, from taking trips to visiting his favorite places. He also appreciates having staff there for him during difficult times, including when he lost his stepdad. Dan enjoys spending time in nature and having outdoor experiences, trying new foods and restaurants, taking photos of nature, and creating cartoon art.

We’re proud to support Frank and Dan as they live life on their own terms and enjoy all that their community has to offer! 💙

Meet Jill!
Jill enjoys watching NCIS, shopping, sewing on her plastic canvas, walking, and snuggling with her dog, JT. She also enjoys coloring, doing laundry, and spending time with her family.

At The Arc, Jill particularly enjoys the flower arrangement activity, going to the movies, and participating in cooking classes. She will also sometimes utilize the sensory room and enjoys participating in various other crafting activities.

Jill is the Jill of the Amanda and Jill Dean Direct Support Award, and she’s been with The Arc since 2007. The Award was created to recognize an exceptional employee in the Direct Support professional field at The Arc of Howard County.

We’re excited to see who this year’s nominees will be! 💙 We are fortunate to have so many passionate and dedicated DSPs who make a difference every day. Some are new to the field, while others have been part of The Arc family for more than 30 years!

P.S. Don’t forget to nominate a DSP via this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScJcEtXuO33ZfNQWiiiTGeZ3He-aI7DcnAjCD4_VzJ2VAMkig/viewform

It takes 21 days to form a habit, according to Dr. Maxwell Maltz in the 1960s. That has now been debunked – as we all know from personal experience and scientific studies.

What is true is that it’s just 21 days to go for The Arc of Howard County’s Golf Tournament! Yes, it’s that soon!

Registration is still open for a foursome or for sponsorship. Join us now for some fun in the sun! And did we say there will be food and drinks all day, as well as raffles, a silent auction and prizes for winners?

Shelley has been with The Arc for 15 years. She lives in one of our supportive homes and attends our Day Program, where she’s built friendships and created a community she values.

Recently, Shelley spent some time in rehab to recover from a fractured foot. Our Direct Support Professionals are now helping her regain her mobility and reach her wellness goals. To celebrate this new beginning, Shelley got a new haircut! Doesn't she look amazing?

We’re so proud of Shelley’s resilience! She's strong, determined, independent, and has a wonderful sense of humor.

None of this would be possible without your generosity. Your gifts help make it possible for people like Shelley to receive the support they need to live full, connected, and meaningful lives. Thank you for being part of Shelley’s journey!

Join us in celebrating equality, inclusion, independence, and opportunity for every woman, as we remember this day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment was approved to give women the right to vote.

At The Arc of Howard County, we believe every person deserves the opportunity to live a life filled with choice, meaningful relationships, independence, and community. We’re proud to support women with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities as they pursue their goals, build connections, and live life on their own terms.

Because equality means everyone has the opportunity to thrive. 💜
