Healthy Acadia is a 501(C)(3) community health organization building vibrant communities and making it easier for all people to lead healthy lives throughout Washington and Hancock counties and across Maine. The scope of our work encompasses six broad areas of focus:

>> Strong Beginnings to support healthy development and resilience from birth to adulthood;

>> Healthy Food for All: ensuring that all people have access to nutritious, affordable food, and to make the healthy choice the easy choice;

>> Active and Healthy Environments: ensuring that our indoor and outdoor spaces are safe, healthy, and promote physical activity and wellness;

>> Healthy Aging: ensuring that all of us can age well — with strength, dignity, comfort, and grace;

>> Substance Prevention and Recovery: supporting people of all ages to live lives free of substance misuse and substance use disorder, and to support individuals throughout their recovery journey; and

>> Health Promotion & Management: improving community supports across a wide range of health needs, from cancer patient navigation and stress reduction to barrier removal for health challenges and chronic disease and pain self-management. As we move into the shorter fall days , Folklore Farm is adjusting the farmstand hours to begin the fall farm shutdown.

This week the farmstand will be open Wednesday-Saturday from 10am-dusk.

Next week the farmstand will shift to being open Friday-Sunday from 10am-dusk.

On the menu: minestrone soup, pasta with homemade sauce, meatballs, fried green tomatoes, and tossed salad, with pound cake and bread pudding for dessert.

18–26 and looking for work that matters?

Healthy Acadia’s Maine Alliance for Recovery Coaching (Maine-ARC) is hiring Youth Recovery Coaches to support young people ages 14–21 in Hancock and Washington counties.

If you’re 18–26, in long-term recovery or a recovery ally, this is an opportunity to use your experience to support someone else’s journey.

You’ll mentor young people, help connect them with resources, and build skills through specialized recovery coach training and professional development.

$18–$20/hour | Full-time + part-time positions | Strong benefits for full-time

We’re looking for someone who is patient, approachable, a good listener, and genuinely wants to support young people. Personal recovery experience or a strong understanding of recovery is highly recommended.

Help create a warm, safe place to stay this winter.

Healthy Acadia is hiring multiple Warming Center Support Staff to join our team at our overnight Warming Center in Ellsworth.

From November through April, the Warming Center provides a warm place to stay for people experiencing homelessness or unsafe housing. Our staff help create an environment where every guest is welcomed with respect, dignity, and compassion.

This is meaningful, hands-on work. Warming Center Support Staff welcome guests, provide supplies and referrals, help maintain a clean and safe space, respond to changing needs, and work with colleagues and volunteers to support our guests throughout the night.

We’re hiring for:
• Temporary seasonal positions, November 9, 2026–April 30, 2027
• Part-time and full-time hours
• Half-night and full overnight shifts
• $23/hour
• Accrued paid time off, eligible paid holidays, and retirement benefits
• Training provided before the season begins

Experience working with people experiencing homelessness or other challenges is preferred, but we’re willing to train the right person. We’re looking for people who are reliable, calm under pressure, good communicators, and committed to treating everyone with respect and dignity.

The Warming Center operates seven nights a week, including holidays, so there are a variety of shifts available.

Prepare for Maine’s Changing Weather

Emergency preparedness isn’t just about having supplies on hand. It also means knowing how weather and environmental conditions can affect our health.

The Maine Public Health Association has created a collection of free climate resilience materials covering topics that are especially relevant here in Maine, including:

🌧️ Flooding and storms
☀️ Extreme heat
💨 Air quality
🦟 Mosquitoes and ticks
🌱 Drought
🌎 Climate and health

The materials explain how these conditions can affect health and offer practical information to help people prepare. They are also available in multiple languages, including English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Somali, Swahili, Lingala, and Vietnamese.

For people in Washington and Hancock counties, some of these risks may feel especially familiar. A few simple steps can help us prepare for what may come.

🦃 The Washington County Turkey-A-Thon Returns October 9!

The 22nd annual Turkey-A-Thon is bringing our community together to help local families enjoy a nutritious holiday meal.

On Friday, October 9, Classic Hits 92.7/95.3 FM and The Border 102.9 FM, in partnership with Healthy Acadia and sponsored by Dunkin’ and VL Tammaro, will collect donations at seven locations across Washington County from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Every dollar raised goes directly toward gift certificates from local grocery stores for Washington County food pantries and food security programs.

🦃 $12 can provide a turkey for a family of four. Donations of any amount are welcome.

This year’s goal is $40,000, and we know our community can make it happen. Last year, you donated $40,538 and set a new Turkey-A-Thon record!
