One of the things we really value at Whitestar is having therapists who aren’t afraid of complexity.

Isabel is one of those therapists.

She has a particular strength in working with complex trauma, dissociation, and Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)—including experiences that can be layered, difficult to put into words, or that haven’t always fit neatly into traditional approaches to therapy.

You don’t need to make your story simpler for therapy. And you don’t need to be “less complex” to deserve a therapist who feels confident sitting with all of it.

We’re also excited to share that Isabel is now fully licensed as an LCSW and accepts most major insurance plans, making this specialized care more accessible.

Isabel is currently accepting new clients. If you’re wondering whether she might be a good fit, start with a free 15-minute consultation. Just a conversation. 🤎

You can reach us at [email protected] or [email protected] to schedule a free consultation.

Looking for a therapist who isn’t going to just throw more coping skills at you? 👋

Here’s the thing: we’re not anti-coping skills. There’s a time and place for tools, strategies, grounding exercises, and learning new ways to care for yourself.

But if you come into therapy saying:

“I’m overwhelmed. I’m exhausted. I can’t keep up.”

The last thing we want to do is hand you another list of things you’re supposed to be doing.

Sometimes the work isn’t adding more. It’s having someone sit with you, get curious about what’s happening, and let things be messy without immediately trying to fix them.

We don’t believe every hard feeling needs a strategy. Sometimes therapy is having another person there who can say, “You don’t have to figure this out right now. We can just be here with it.”

That’s the kind of space we’re trying to create at Whitestar.

And if this sounds like the kind of therapy you’ve been looking for, you’re welcome to start with a free 15-minute consultation with one of our therapists. We take the work seriously without believing therapy always has to feel so serious.

Just a conversation to see how it feels.

We got to have a really good conversation about women’s mental health.

brought the questions, and Wayne and I sat down to answer them—from our own perspectives as therapists, and as humans.

We talked about self-care, boundaries, relationships, motherhood, identity, guilt, and some of the ways these words and ideas can get simplified when the reality is usually a lot more complicated.

There aren’t a lot of neat, tidy answers in this one. There are multiple perspectives, nuance, and plenty of “well… it depends.”

Which, if you know us, feels pretty fitting.

The full conversation, A Conversation on Women’s Mental Health, is now live on the Whitestar blog.

Thank you to Flora & Co. for asking the questions and giving us the space to dig into them. 🤎

I’ve been feeling depleted this week.

And while there are a number of factors that play into that—including a teething baby—when I really reflect on what I’m feeling, I know it’s deeper than that.

I am tired of how much pain we’ve been expected to witness—and somehow learn to live with.

I’m tired from reading about sexual violence. Tired from watching people fight to be believed. Tired from witnessing death, cruelty, and injustice become part of the background noise of everyday life.

And sometimes I think we forget how profoundly not normal that is.

People talk a lot about anxiety, depression, burnout, and dysregulation. People teach coping skills and tell others to practice self-care. But in moments like this, that feels so far from the point.

I don’t want us to get so good at labeling individual people’s distress that we stop questioning the environment they’re being asked to function in.

Some things should make us angry. Some things should make us sad. Some things should be difficult to carry.

Not every uncomfortable feeling is a symptom that needs to be fixed.

Sometimes you’re having a very human response to a world that can be deeply unhealthy.

You’re normal. This isn’t.

It bears repeating:
This
Isn’t
Normal.

Never treat it like it is.

This is something I think about a lot as a therapist.

I have heard so many women tell stories of sexual assault, coercion, or experiences they spent years not even knowing they were “allowed” to call assault.

And yet, I rarely hear men talk about knowing someone who has caused that harm.

That disconnect is hard for me to ignore.

I love the work I get to do with survivors. I am honored when someone trusts me enough to let me sit beside them while they make sense of something that never should have happened to them.

But I also want fewer people sitting in therapy rooms trying to heal from sexual violence in the first place.

And that requires more than telling survivors we believe them.

It requires uncomfortable conversations about consent, coercion, accountability, the behavior we excuse in people we love, and the systems and policies we choose to support.

Therapy doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Neither does sexual violence.

Supporting survivors matters.

Changing the conditions that keep creating survivors matters, too.

Let me take this Monday to help you get to know one of our therapists a little better!

Meet Katie Goldberg, LPC ✨

Katie brings warmth, compassion, and a whole lot of humanity into the therapy room. With 6+ years of experience, she believes in creating a space where you can show up exactly as you are — no perfect words or polished version of yourself required.

Outside of therapy, Katie is a twin mom and loves mountain hiking (which feels like a pretty impressive combination of adventure and chaos, honestly).

Not only is Katie a good therapist, she's also just a very cool person.

We’re so glad to have Katie as part of the Whitestar team.

Interested in working with Katie? Reach out to learn more about availability and getting started. Email us at [email protected].

This post may be controversial. Two controversial posts in a row—I must be in a controversial mood lately.

My employees and friends will tell you that I say “I’m bad at business” a lot.

And I mean it. But it’s not really a dig at myself.

It’s true that our rates are lower and that we take most major insurances. It’s true that I pay our therapists well—and that I’ve structured things in ways that carry more risk for the business because I want our therapists to actually get paid for their time.

And it’s true that those choices make it harder to have huge profit margins.

Sometimes I wonder if I’m doing it wrong.

But then I remember, I’m doing things in the way that feels most right for me.

I use insurance for my own therapy. I know what it feels like to look for a therapist and have cost be part of the equation. And I sleep better at night knowing that the way we run Whitestar makes therapy a little easier for someone else to access.

And somewhere along the way, I decided that making enough while doing something I can feel good about is enough for me.

So maybe I am bad at business.

But if being “good at business” means putting the bottom line before the humans we’re here to serve, I think I’m okay with that.

People first. Business second. Always.

I’m going to say something controversial—my fall girlies, please don’t kill me, but… I don’t love fall.

I know. I KNOW.

And there are things about fall that I genuinely love. Decorating my house. Baggy sweaters. Apple picking. That first crisp day after a hot summer. I get why you all lose your minds over it.

But I’ve never been a fall girly.

For me, fall has always come with this weird undercurrent of dread.

Because while everyone else is getting excited about cozy season, part of my brain is noticing that it’s getting dark earlier. The days are getting shorter. Winter is coming. And I know what that means for me.

I’ve struggled with seasonal affective disorder for a long time, and there’s something strange about knowing a harder version of yourself tends to show up around the same time every year.

So fall becomes this really complicated mix of “look how beautiful everything is” and “oh no, here we go again.”

And maybe that’s why I wanted to talk about it.

Because sometimes the seasons everyone tells us we’re supposed to love don’t feel that way. Sometimes something can be beautiful and still be hard for you. You can enjoy parts of it without pretending you enjoy all of it.

So yes, I will absolutely decorate my entire house with tiny mummies. I will wear the giant sweater. I will pick the apples.

And I’ll probably still be counting down the days until spring.

Fall and I? It’s complicated.

Sometimes the treatment plan is sitting in a patch of sun and minding your business.

Also, I captured this little rainbow halo completely by accident and was genuinely amazed when I looked at the photo afterward. 🌈 Like okay universe, we get it. Lola's the chosen one.

Anyway—consider this your reminder that not everything that helps has to be profound. Sometimes it’s warmth, rest, a quiet moment, or doing absolutely nothing for a little while.

What’s your version of sitting in the sun lately?
