The American Society of Neurophysiological Monitoring was founded in 1990 to serve the emerging field of neurophysiologic monitoring. As defined by the Society, neurophysiologic monitoring includes any measure employed to assess the ongoing functional integrity of the central or peripheral nervous system in the operating theatre or other acute care setting. Intraoperative neurophysiological monito

ring (IONM) has evolved over the last several decades. Neurophysiologic signals are monitored continuously during surgery for adverse changes, detection of which enables corrective action. Risk of postoperative neurological deficit, such as weakness, loss of sensation, hearing loss and impairment of other bodily functions is thereby reduced. In addition to detection of change, surgical guidance can be offered in specialized circumstances. Members of the IONM team include but is not limited to: technologists, surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, neurophysiologists, and the supervising person. Team members are those who generate the setting & monitor the patient (technologists), identify the changes (technologists and monitoring personnel), institute management plans that involve surgical maneuvers (surgeons), physiological, pharmacological and anesthetic management (anesthesiologists), moving and repositioning of electrical equipment (nurses), and repositioning of the patient (surgeon, anesthesiologists, nurses). The Society is dedicated to the advancement of quality neurophysiologic monitoring services for neuroprotection. Created in memory of Todor's lasting impact on the field of intraoperative neuromonitoring, this award recognizes an early-career professional who embodies the qualities he exemplified every day: innovation, collaboration, dedication, and service.

As the Logistics and Systems Officer at Accurate Neuromonitoring, Igor combines clinical excellence with technical expertise, managing both IOM responsibilities and the company's IT systems and inventory. With experience spanning evoked potentials, sleep studies, and EEG, he is recognized by colleagues as an indispensable team member, an exceptional programmer, and a creative problem solver.

His nominator shared that, “Igor and Todor would have been kindred spirits and would have quickly developed a friendship based on mutual respect, technical facility, software design, and a zeal for life.” Congratulations Igor, Todor would have been proud!

We are proud to recognize Dr. Cristina Ruiz Diaz, MD, CNIM, as a recipient of the ASNM Mary Stecker Award!

Established in 2007 by ASNM Past President Dr. Mark Stecker, the Mary Stecker Award honors the legacy of his mother by supporting early-career IONM professionals. The scholarship provides recipients with the opportunity to attend the ASNM Annual Meeting, where they can expand their knowledge, build professional connections, and further their careers through valuable educational and networking experiences.

Cristina's journey to the field of intraoperative neuromonitoring is one of perseverance, dedication, and continuous learning. After earning her MD in 2015 and completing neurosurgical training in Paraguay, Cristina relocated to the United States, where she discovered a passion for intraoperative neuromonitoring. She earned her CNIM certification in 2022 and now serves on a pediatric IONM team in Philadelphia, where she specializes in complex spine deformity procedures, tethered cord surgeries, posterior fossa tumors, and Chiari malformations. Committed to lifelong learning, Cristina is expanding her expertise into advanced procedures such as mapping and intramedullary tumor cases. Although she is new to the ASNM community, this marks her second consecutive Annual Meeting—and this year as a scholarship recipient.

We are proud to recognize Madison Welsh, BS, CNIM as one this year’s recipients of the ASNM Mary Stecker Award!

Established in 2007 by ASNM Past President Dr. Mark Stecker, the Mary Stecker Award honors the legacy of his mother by supporting early-career IONM professionals. The scholarship provides recipients with the opportunity to attend the ASNM Annual Meeting, where they can expand their knowledge, build professional connections, and further their careers through valuable educational and networking experiences.

Madison earned her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Kansas State University in 2021 and achieved her CNIM certification in 2024. Although she is early in her career, she has already earned the trust and respect of surgeons and interpreting physicians, who frequently request her for monitoring cases due to her excellent signal quality, professionalism, and passion. Driven to learn, Madison is continually expanding her knowledge of the field, with a particular interest in advancing electrode design and adhesive systems to improve patient care. She has also embraced increasingly complex procedures, including vascular and neuro-oncology cases, demonstrating both initiative and a commitment to professional growth.

Brooke has been an unwavering advocate for the neurodiagnostic community and a passionate champion for intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) technologists. Since joining the ASNM DEI Task Force in 2022 and serving as its Chair since 2024, she has worked tirelessly to promote representation, transparency, and meaningful opportunities for underrepresented groups within both ASNM and the profession.

This award honors ASNM members whose dedication to both Board and Committee service has made a lasting impact on the Society. Over many years of membership, Cheryl has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to ASNM through her leadership, expertise, and willingness to serve. During her Board term from 2020–2024, she played an active role in numerous Society initiatives, frequently served as an invited lecturer at ASNM educational events, and co-chaired a successful Fall Virtual Symposium. Her contributions have continued through the Finance Committee, where she has shared her financial expertise and has served as Committee Chair since 2025 after being elected ASNM Treasurer. As a valued member of the Executive Committee, Cheryl has helped strengthen the Society.
