This week, we celebrate a remarkable milestone: the U.S. Army's 251st birthday! πŸŽ‰ Established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, the Army is older than our nation itself, having been formed a full year before independence was declared.

To all the Army veterans we serve, you carry a piece of this incredible history with you. To our soldiers, both past and present: thank you for your service, and happy 251st! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

πŸŒŠπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Patriot Profile: Meet Chuck! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŒŠ

In Chuck's own words:

"After high school, I dreamed of becoming a teacher, but life had other plans at the time. With the Vietnam War in full swing, I enlisted in the Navy at 18 years old. I served as a Fire Control Technician (FTB1), responsible for testing and launching missiles. Before today's advanced technology, we relied on radar and sonar data to calculate distance, speed, and trajectory.

I proudly served as part of the 'Blue Crew' aboard the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601), a ballistic missile submarine stationed in Holy Loch, Scotland. From there, we flew to Guam to board submarines operating in the Pacific. The USS Robert E. Lee was part of the historic '41 for Freedom' fleet, an accomplishment I remain especially proud of today.

After five years aboard the submarine, I was transferred to the Guided Missile Academy in Virginia Beach, which allowed my original dream of teaching to come full circle as I trained and mentored others.

During my 10 years of military service, I learned the importance of teamwork and the value of relying on others to accomplish a mission. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my life and led to a successful career in finance after leaving the Navy.

Today, my 1776 Caregiver, Kimberly, helps me manage household activities and prepares some truly amazing meals."

Thank you, Chuck, for your service beneath the waves β€” and a big shoutout to Kimberly for the daily care that keeps the home Chuck built running well! β€οΈπŸ™Œ

Patriot Profile: Eddie πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Service runs deep in Eddie's family. His father was a Sergeant in the Army, his brother a Captain in the National Guard, and Eddie himself proudly served as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force. Today, his nephews continue the legacy of service.

In Eddie's own words:
"I joined the Air Force in 1968 at just 19 years old and served for four years. After completing basic training, I became a medic, stationed at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Michigan. I received deployment orders twice, but both times they were revoked. While I was ready to go wherever needed, I fulfilled my duty stateside.

As a medic, no two days were alike. We tackled everything from dental procedures to assisting with major medical operations for injured soldiers returning from Vietnam. It was challenging work that instilled in me discipline, compassion, and the importance of serving others during their most difficult times.

My commitment to veterans didn't stop when I left the Air Force. About ten years ago, my nephew found a Vietnam-era Army truck that needed some love. Together, we restored it and now proudly showcase it at events like the Traveling Vietnam Wall, national parades, and Touch-A-Truck events.

This truck means so much more than just a vehicle; it's a tribute to those who sacrificed for our country, especially those who gave their lives. I feel honored to preserve this history and share it with future generations.

I've dedicated much of my life to serving others, so accepting help for myself hasn't always been easy. Thankfully, my caregiver Holli from 1776 Senior Care assists me with household tasks and meal prep. I'm incredibly grateful for her support! πŸ™

Thank you, Eddie, for your lifetime of service β€” and a special thanks to Holli for being there during this chapter.

This week in 1776: Richard Henry Lee boldly stepped up in Congress to propose the resolution that "these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States." πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

But the vote wouldn’t happen for almost a month. The real work β€” convincing, debating, and building consensus β€” was just beginning.

Remember, big changes take time and someone has to be the first to speak up!

This week marks 82 years since brave young men from Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Geneva, and Elmhurst embarked on landing craft toward the beaches of Normandy. Those who returned helped shape the nation we cherish today. Now, the youngest among them are in their 90s. Every story we can still hear is a precious gift. β€οΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

🌟 Patriot Profile: Dean 🌟

In Dean's own words:

"I guess volunteering has always been in my blood, even as a young man. I learned that spirit from my father, who served in World War II. In 1969, during the Vietnam War, I volunteered and joined the Navy, where I served for four years. I still remember being sworn in during halftime at a Chicago Bulls game.

Because of my education in linguistics and my fluency in French, I imagined I might be stationed somewhere glamorous in France. Instead, the Navy sent me to Laos, where I worked as a Vietnamese translator. So much for croissants and the Eiffel Tower!

My responsibilities included air traffic surveillance and transcribing messages coming from North Vietnam. Most of the intercepted chatter was routine, though every now and then I'd catch something important enough to get the attention of my commanders.

For my final year of service, I returned to the United States and served with the Armed Forces Police in Washington, D.C. During that time, I was assigned to the Watergate Complex and happened to be working on the day the Watergate burglars broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters. We were all escorted out of the building that day β€” which turned out to be 'the beginning of the end for Nixon.'

After my Navy service, I married and raised three children. I eventually took over my family's engraving and ink business, originally started by my grandfather. My commitment to community service didn't end with the Navy. Over the years, I've served as president of the local school board, been appointed to the State Economic Board by Governor George Ryan, and even ran for the Village Board. I figured if people trusted me with classified messages, maybe they'd trust me with local government too!

Now, at 79 years old, my volunteer days have slowed down a bit. With the support of my 1776 caregiver, Yolanda, I spend my time outdoors in my gardens and tinkering around the house." 🌱

Thank you, Dean, for your service β€” and to Yolanda for the daily care that makes Dean's gardens and his stories possible! ❀️

This week in 1776: Richard Henry Lee was busy drafting the resolution that would officially call for independence. ✍️ He laid the groundwork, and others refined it, paving the way for a whole continent to carry it forward. 🌍

Big changes are like a relay race. Just like in 1776, caregiving follows the same pattern. It starts with a family member initiating the conversation, a doctor confirming what's needed, and a caregiver stepping in to help. πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’¨ Everything works seamlessly because everyone passes the baton.

🌟 Patriot Profile: Darrell Daley 🌟

Meet Darrell, who enlisted in the Navy at just 17, shortly before the end of the Vietnam War. By 18, he was serving aboard the USS Little Rock in Italy for two years. As a "fireman" (the ship's boiler operator, not the rescue type), he worked deep within the hull, managing the powerful steam boilers that kept the ship running.

After his military service, Darrell married, adopted two children, and dedicated 34 years to law enforcement at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, where he cared for fellow veterans.

In his own words:
"I learned many things during my military service, but what I am most proud of is knowing that I was doing something that helped people. Of course, my son still teases me because I fold my T-shirts, socks, and underwear exactly the way I was taught in the military."

Now, Darrell receives some much-deserved care from his 1776 caregiver, Stephanie, who he says is "beyond beautiful in everything that she does for me."

From Navy fireman to decades of service to fellow veterans and now being cared forβ€”Darrell has dedicated his life to helping others. We are honored to support him and grateful for amazing caregivers like Stephanie who make moments like this possible.

Thank you for your service, Darrell! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This Memorial Day, we remember those who didn't make it home. Many seniors in our community carry the weight of lossβ€”a brother, a friend, a husband. While the names may fade from memory, the grief remains.

This weekend, we stand with them. To every Gold Star family in DuPage and Kane Counties: we see you, we honor your loved ones, and we are grateful for their sacrifice. β€οΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
