John W. Murphy, age 70, a longtime resident of Elmhurst, passed away after a brave fight with cancer. Retired member of Carpenters Local 54.
Beloved husband of Jerilyn, née Gregory; loving father of Shannon, Jordan (Matt) Hall, and Mitchell; proud grandfather of Blake Murphy, Rylee Higginbotham, and Margot Hall; dear brother of Steven (Cheryl) Murphy and Julie (Mark) Fredricksen; and fond uncle of many.

John was a deeply selfless man who always put his family first without judgment. Approachable and welcoming, he was someone who truly listened to those around him. Throughout his career, he was always a leader first, never a boss. He had a deep passion for his career in the trades and took immense pride in telling stories about all the buildings and projects he worked on that helped build Chicago.

John was also the kind of person who would always show up for others. If he found out you needed anything—whether it was someone to talk to or help fixing things around your house—he would he there to help get the job done. Throughout his life, John fought three separate battles with cancer with little complaining, with prostate cancer ultimately taking his life.

Above all, John loved spending time with his family and friends. A day spent watching the White Sox or an evening listening to live music was a day well spent, as was unwinding at home watching NCIS or Yellowstone while sipping on his Grey Goose vodka.

Visitation Sunday, October 18, 2026, 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a service to be held at 6:00 p.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Interment Private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, 1250 Fourth Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401. SOME SERVICES CAN BE A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED. THE GIBBONS SPECIALIZE IN COMPLICATED.

Rob Zoromski's mom made a couple things very clear to him. First, she knew Marya Gibbons, and she wanted the Gibbons Family to take care of her funeral services. Secondly, she wished to be buried alongside her husband. That's a very normal thing for a loving wife to desire. There was a bit of a challenge to overcome to accomplish the second of her wishes. Rob was extremely pleased with the service provided, stating unequivocally that Marya held his hand from the start to the very end of the services in their Elmhurst funeral home.
This is when the challenge came in. Rob's mom was from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and that's where her husband was laid to rest. It was now February, and the funeral director in Michigan, who Marya coordinated with, advised her that the ground held over 100 inches of snow there, not a rare occurrence in that area. While Rob's mom could be transported to the UP, a burial couldn't take place until Spring time, along with several other loved ones awaiting their time of internment. As Rob says "Instead of 6 or 7 days, it was 76 days, which was very hard on our family. The Gibbons Family was here (and there!) for us throughout the whole time". That's the difference that makes a big difference. .

David Jerome Hayden, M.D., 88, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, four days shy of his 89th birthday.

Dave, as he was known to family and friends, was raised in River Forest, Illinois, the eldest of three children of Dr. Jerome W. and Winifred V., nee Meany, Hayden. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1959 and from Loyola University Chicago School of Medicine in 1963. Drafted in 1964 for Vietnam, he served as a Captain and Flight Surgeon in the Army Medical Corps, then completed his residency in ophthalmology at Cook County Hospital.

Dave met Nancy Karen Cowel at Forest Apothecary (River Forest, IL), and they married on September 21, 1968, the day after his 31st birthday. Nine years later they welcomed Alison, followed by Amelia and Jerome. Dave lovingly referred to his children as "his miracles."

He practiced ophthalmology in Elmhurst for nearly 50 years and performed the first corneal transplant at Elmhurst Hospital.

Dave was larger than life: quick-witted, a natural storyteller and the keeper of the family jokes. He also made people feel seen, and was never shy about telling someone when he saw something good in them. During his final weeks in the hospital, he thanked his doctors and nurses, shook their hands and found ways to make them laugh.

A devoted Catholic and proud American, he treasured his Irish heritage—a Corker through and through—and his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But of all the roles he held, the ones he cherished most were Dad and Grandpa.

Dave is survived by Nancy, his beloved wife of nearly 58 years; his children, Alison (Richard) Kehrer, Amelia Hayden, and Jerome W. Hayden; his granddaughters, Katharine and Monroe; Nancy's sisters, Linda (William) McGuire, Christine Cowel, and Diane (David) Miller; his nieces and nephews, Stephanie (Miller) Mersky, Christopher Miller, Michael McGuire, Peter McGuire, Kelley (Hayden) Stout, and Bill Chepell; and many cousins and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Jerome W. Hayden and Winifred V. (Meany) Hayden; his sister, Judith J. (Hayden) Moran; his brother, Thomas J. Hayden; and his brother-in-law, Dale Cowel.

Visitation Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. until time of prayers 9:00 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, Oakbrook Terrace. Interment Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Hillside.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in David's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306. Live stream of funeral mass available through funeral home website. For funeral information please call 630-832-0018 or www.gibbonsfuneralhome.com

John F. Nicoli
It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of John Nicoli, who
passed away on September 9, 2026, at the age of 61.

John was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a treasured friend to so many. He shared 32
years of marriage with his beloved wife, Maria, and together they built a life filled with love,
family, friendship, laughter, and countless memories.

John was incredibly proud of his wife and his children, Isabella and Paul. His family was at the
heart of his life, and the love and pride he had for them was evident to everyone who knew him.
John had a remarkable ability to appreciate the beauty in life. He noticed the things that made life
special and had a gift for making the people around him happy. He possessed a wonderful sense
of humor and could make people laugh even during the most difficult times. His laughter, wit,
and the ability to bring joy to others were among the qualities that made him so deeply loved.

John had many interests and enjoyed experiencing life in many ways. Music was an important
part of his life, and he was a talented musician who especially enjoyed playing his guitars. He
also treasured time spent with family and friends sharing a meal, enjoying a conversation,
listening to music, laughing together, or simply being in one another's company.

John had an extraordinary ability to understand how things worked. He could look at complex machinery and through his natural mechanical intuition and problem-solving ability, reverse engineer how it worked. He had a rare talent for taking something complicated apart in his mind, understanding its individual components and processes, and seeing how everything came together. John took pride in being highly resourceful and always maintained a positive outlook on life. This ability reflected his remarkable way of thinking.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Maria, his children, Isabella and Paul; his brothers, Tony and Joe; his brother-in-law, Vito; nieces and nephews; and his many cousins and dear friends. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.

John's life was far too short, but the love he gave, the happiness he created, the music he played,
and the memories he leaves behind will endure. He will be remembered for his love of family,
his appreciation of beauty, his music, his wonderful sense of humor, and his extraordinary ability
to make people smile. John was deeply loved. He will be profoundly missed. And he will remain in our hearts always.

Visitation Sunday, September 20, 2026, 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday, September 21, 8:00 a.m. until time of prayers 9:00 a.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 South York Road, (½ mile North of Saint Charles Road), Elmhurst. Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Wheaton.
