The original hospital was dedicated in February, 1958 with nursing home additions opening in 1966, 1970 and 1973.

Boundary Waters Care Center is the largest healthcare center serving Ely and surrounding communities bordering the vast acreage of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). The hospital boasts

- Physical and occupational therapy
- Chemotheraphy
- Fully-staffed 24-7 radiology departm

ent for X-ray, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Echocardiogram, CT Scan, Ultrasound and Mammography
- Professional OR and anesthesia team and newly-built state-of-the-art operating room suites
- "Swing Bed" for patients no longer requiring acute care hospitalization, but still in need of additional therapy before going home
- 24-7 Emergency Room with staff fully certified in pediatric advanced life support, neo-natal advance life support and advance cardiac life support.
- A heliport located on the hospital campus for access to medical helicopters which can transport patients quickly to larger facilities if needed.

As wildfires continued in the area over the weekend, our residents created artwork to thank the firefighters and first responders for their efforts. Our resident Lucille painted an original wildfire scene in honor of those protecting our community, and local community members joined our residents to help express gratitude to the amazing men and women who keep us safe. 🚒💙

We are actively monitoring the wildfire situation and staying in close communication with local emergency partners to ensure we are prepared to respond if conditions change. As new information becomes available, we will share updates with our community.
