Your blood type is only part of what makes your blood unique. 🩸

For Javier, donating blood is a simple way to give back. But every donation also plays a role in building a diverse blood supply that can help patients receive well-matched blood when they need a transfusion.

Why does diversity in blood donation matter? Blood types and other blood characteristics are inherited. When people from a wide range of backgrounds donate, it helps create a blood supply that better reflects the diverse patients who rely on blood transfusions.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, Javier is reminding us that every community has a role to play.

❤️ Have you ever donated blood? Tell us what inspired you to give.

💜 Giving back is in Tammy's blood.

Inspired by her father, Tammy began donating blood as soon as she was old enough, making it a family tradition that continues to this day.

Her commitment to donation was reinforced during the pandemic, when she set a goal to donate platelets every month. On her birthday, after completing her 12th platelet donation of the year, she met a cancer survivor who shared how donated platelets helped save his life and made his treatment possible. The grateful stranger even bought her breakfast, turning an ordinary donation day tradition into an unforgettable moment.

Tammy later experienced the impact of blood donation from another perspective when her own father needed lifesaving transfusions following major heart surgery.

Today, Tammy has reached an incredible milestone: 125 platelet donations! She is a familiar face at our Fox Chapel Donation Center and credits the wonderful staff, including her favorite team member, Jerry, for making every visit special.

Thank you, Tammy, for your dedication to helping save lives, and thank you to Jerry and the Fox Chapel team for supporting donors every step of the way. ❤️🩸

Follow in Jerry's footsteps and start a donation tradition of your own. Make an appointment today at vitalant.org.

For 20 years, Angela has been helping connect blood donors with patients in need, including the last 10 years with Vitalant. For the past four years, she has served as Donor Care Supervisor at our Moon Donation Center, where she's supported by dedicated team members Annika and Donna.

What keeps Angela motivated? Being part of something bigger than herself and helping save lives every day.

She is continually inspired by the generosity of blood donors.

"My donors are coming out of the kindness of their heart and are very selfless. They're giving a part of themselves to help save a life."

Angela is passionate about ensuring first-time donors have a positive experience. She takes time to explain how to prepare for a donation by staying hydrated, eating well, and getting plenty of rest. Her goal is simple: help every donor feel comfortable and confident so they'll return.

Angela also believes a positive workplace leads to a great donor experience. She tries to show up each day with an attitude of "we're going to get it done" and makes a point to check in with her team, ask about their lives outside of work, and make sure they have the support they need to succeed.

Building relationships is one of the most rewarding parts of her job. Whether she's meeting donors who have been giving blood for 60 or 70 years or hearing personal stories about loved ones whose lives depended on blood transfusions, those moments reinforce the importance of Vitalant's mission.

Thank you, Donna, Annika, and Angela, for the compassion, positivity, and dedication you bring to our donors and community every day. ❤️🩸

The need for more blood donations is being felt nationwide. Hosting a blood drive is one more way to help.

For Alicia, blood donation is personal.

After watching her great aunt battle acute myeloid leukemia, Alicia saw firsthand how life-changing blood transfusions can be. One conversation has stayed with her ever since:

"I'm really proud of you for donating blood even though you were scared to."

Today, Alicia is a longtime donor, Vital Elite member, and newly appointed Vitalant Blood Donor Coordinator. She recently organized her first community blood drive at her church in Swissvale, PA, helping support patients during a critical blood shortage.

Next year, she'll continue honoring her great aunt by leading more blood drives and participating in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride to support blood cancer patients and their families.

Thank you, Alicia, for turning inspiration into action and encouraging others to give the gift of life.

A blood drive can make all the difference.

Frank G. “Jerry” Garrison Jr. has faced an incredible journey with Multiple Myeloma, a serious fungal infection, and Aplastic Anemia. Throughout that journey, blood donations provided critical support, comfort, and hope for Jerry and his loved ones during some of the most challenging times.

Every blood drive helps ensure that patients facing serious illnesses have access to the lifesaving blood products they need. When individuals, organizations, businesses, and community groups host blood drives, they create opportunities for neighbors to help neighbors in a truly meaningful way.

One blood drive. Countless lives touched.

Jerry’s need for blood inspired friends and family to organize a blood drive in his honor. Today, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the difference blood donors make every day for patients and families navigating serious health challenges.

You can help patients in need by donating at a location nearest you: vitalant.org.

Two donors. Two stories. One shared belief: every patient deserves access to the blood they need. ❤️

For Myriam and Sarah, blood donation is about more than giving time. It’s about helping strengthen a blood supply that reflects the diverse communities we serve.

Blood type is inherited, and for some patients who rely on regular transfusions, including those living with conditions like sickle cell disease, finding a closely matched donor can be critical. A more diverse group of blood donors helps improve the chances that patients can receive the best possible match when they need it.

During National Minority Donor Awareness Month, we’re celebrating donors like Myriam and Sarah and encouraging more people from every background to join them.

Have you donated blood? Share what inspired you to give. ❤️

🎉 32 years of making a difference!

Every blood donation has a story behind it, and Cheryl has helped make thousands of those stories possible.

This year marks 32 years with Vitalant for Cheryl, Donor Care Supervisor at the Vitalant Donation Center in Cranberry, PA, a center she helped open more than 20 years ago.

Cheryl says she spends most of her days "assisting heroes" because that's exactly how she sees blood donors. Their selfless gifts help save lives and support patients they will likely never meet.

Whether she's calming a nervous first-time donor, celebrating her team's successes, or recognizing the dedication of colleagues like Tory, Cheryl leads with compassion, experience, and gratitude.

Reflecting on her career, Cheryl says her time with Vitalant has been an amazing experience, made even more meaningful by the people and donors she's met along the way.

Thank you, Cheryl and Tory, for your dedication to helping save lives every day. 🩸❤️
