With icy sidewalks and parking lots, now’s the time to slow it down and protect yourself from slips and falls. Wear shoes or boots with good traction, take shorter steps, and keep your hands free for balance. One fall can turn into weeks of pain—especially for feet and ankles.
Stay upright, stay safe, and if you do take a spill, don’t ignore lingering pain!

We asked three podiatrists to share their favorite non-slip shoes that prevent falls and injuries. Their recommendations were from brands like Hoka, Brooks and New Balance.

Sheffield Foot and Ankle is growing...

Please join us in welcoming our newest provider and celebrating our new location in North Olmsted beginning February 1st!

Dr. Stephen Musser has been providing quality foot and ankle care to the residents of North Olmsted for over 30 years. He is a graduate of Padua Franciscan High School and John Carroll University. He obtained his podiatric medical degree from The Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1989, after which he completed his post graduate residency at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Musser entered private practice in 1992 and is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

In his spare time, Dr. Musser enjoys spending time with his family and classic car cruise-ins during the warmer months. He is also a member of the Cleveland Road Runners, and most recently ran the Cleveland Half-Marathon in May of 2023.


Dr. Natalie Spicer will also be available for consultations at our North Olmsted location in the coming weeks. We look forward to continuing to grow alongside our community and to caring for both new and existing patients at our North Olmsted office beginning February 1st. We will see you at 25043 Lorain Road very soon!

How long have humans been wearing shoes?

According to research done at Washington University where they analyzed foot bones from early humans and Neanderthals, humans started wearing shoes about 40,000 years ago. The oldest pair of shoes that was found was buried in ancient sheep dung in a cave in Armenia. It was a 5,500-year-old leather moccasin that is older than Stonehenge.

Fear of Feet? Podophobia.

Podophobia manifests itself as anger or extreme disgust to the sight of feet. People with podophobia get upset by reading about feet, talking about feet, and even touching their own feet. As you can imagine, this can have harmful effects on people’s health because it impacts their ability to put and remove shoes and socks or wash their own feet, leading to serious infections and other problems.

World’s largest and smallest feet

The largest foot on a living person in the world measures 1 foot, 3.96 inches in length (EU size 58). The smallest? 3.72 inches long.
Toe wrestling is an actual competitive sport.
Since 1970, toe wrestling has been a sport. There is a Toe Wrestling World Championship in England complete with men’s and women’s division. In toe wrestling, opponents try to pin and hold down their opponent’s bare toes for three seconds. The one who wins two times out of three rounds wins.

We ask a lot of our feet.

The average person takes 8,000-10,000 steps each day. That adds up to approximately 115,000 miles in a typical lifetime—the equivalent to circling the globe more than four times! In an average day of walking, your feet experience forces totaling hundreds of tons—the equivalent of a fully-loaded cement truck.

Sheffield Foot and Ankle would like to welcome Dr. Natalie A. Spicer to the group! She will be accepting new patients at our Sheffield and Oberlin locations starting on July 15th.

Dr. Spicer is originally from Springfield, Tennessee. She attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee where she graduated summa cm laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. While at Tennessee State, Dr. Spicer also competed on the Division I women’s golf team from 2013-2017.

Afterwards, she went on to obtain her doctorate degree from Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in 2021 and recently completed her three-year surgical residency at Mercy Health Regional Medical Center/Cleveland Clinic foundation in Cleveland, Ohio where she trained in reconstructive forefoot/rearfoot surgery, wound care, sports medicine, diabetic limb salvage, foot/ankle trauma, and general podiatric medicine. Dr. Spicer is currently board qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

In her free time, Dr. Spicer enjoys cheering on her Tennessee sports teams, especially the Tennessee Titans. She enjoys traveling, attending different sporting events with her fiance, Anthony, and spending time with her cat and two dogs. During the summer months, you can usually find her out on the golf course or at a baseball game cheering on the Cleveland Guardians.

Meet Heidi, our certified medical nail technician!
Some of you may already recognize Heidi from the front desk at our Sheffield location but may not realize that Heidi has many years of experience on the clinical side as well.
As a certified medical nail technician, she has completed an advanced course including training in: proper aseptic care; diseases and disorders of the feet; working with at-risk patients; and had completed an internship in a podiatry office prior to providing hands on care for nearly 20 years.
Our practice has continued to grow and Heidi will begin assisting our doctors with patient care visits very soon!

This week our doctors participated in the Aging Well Senior Expo, organized by the Lorain County Council on Aging. MA Crystal and Drs. Vasko and Fascione provided foot and ankle education and shared information on the services provided by Sheffield Foot and Ankle. This beneficial and well organized event is designed to promote community services, local agencies and products to our senior residents of Lorain County. We look forward to joining you in 2023!

Attention Oberlin and Sheffield Foot and Ankle Patients, Families and Friends: MASKING POLICY UPDATE

* Effective 10/10/2022 Masks are no longer REQUIRED at our Sheffield location but are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED as per CDC and local hospital procedural updates dated 9/23/2022. Masks are REQUIRED at our Ashland location until further notice in order to align with current University Hospital masking policies.

* We ask that if you have had a recent exposure to COVID-19 or have any respiratory symptoms, ie coughing, sneezing that you please mask while in our office to avoid putting our staff and patients at risk.

The health and safety of our patients and staff are our top priority. We will continue to provide our services with the following considerations:
1. If you are experiencing or have experienced within the last ten days : acute respiratory illness, ie coughing, difficulty breathing, fever,

COVID-19 Update - June 1st

Yes! We are still requiring masking in our facility.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasized that its new masking recommendations for people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not apply to health care settings. This means that staff, patients, residents and visitors should continue to wear masks as recommended in all healthcare facilities.

We thank you for your continued compliance and cooperation in keeping our patients and staff healthy.
