If you’re a Liberty MD patient, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard Dr. Aaron talk about methylated B vitamins. 😂 There’s a reason.
Most of us know that B vitamins are important—but something many people don’t realize is that not all forms of B vitamins are the same.
Our bodies don't simply take in a vitamin and immediately put it to work. Nutrients often have to be absorbed, converted and moved through different biochemical pathways before the body can use them.
That’s where methylated B vitamins get interesting.
Two you may see on supplement labels are:
🔹 B9: 5-MTHF (methylfolate) — a biologically active form of folate
🔹 B12: methylcobalamin — a bioactive form of vitamin B12
Folate and vitamin B12 participate in some incredibly important processes throughout the body, including:
⚡ Energy metabolism
🧠 Brain and nervous system function
🩸 Red blood cell production
🧬 DNA and healthy cell production
🔄 Methylation and homocysteine metabolism
So when Dr. Aaron looks at a supplement, he isn't necessarily just looking for “B12” or “folate” on the label.
He pays attention to the form.
And there's another piece to this story: not everyone's body handles folate metabolism exactly the same way. Genetics—including common variants involving the MTHFR enzyme—can influence parts of this pathway.
