A Call to Action for us all!
Kansas anti-hunger advocates are calling for immediate action as SNAP participation continues to drastically decline, putting more Kansans at risk of hunger and food insecurity. At the same time, families across the state are reporting delayed benefits, problems completing recertifications, and some benefits being terminated completely unexpectedly.
Nearly 7,000 Kansans lost SNAP in the most recent month alone. Since July 2025, more than 32,000 Kansans, including more than 14,000 children, have lost benefits. These problems arise as Kansas implements the sweeping SNAP changes required by H.R. 1, signed into law last year, including expanded work requirements and new eligibility rules that have dramatically increased the administrative burden on states.
“The nearly 7,000-person drop in the most recent month is by far the largest single-month decline we have seen since H.R. 1 was enacted, and it should raise serious questions about what is happening to vulnerable low-income families, seniors and disabled individuals across our state,” said Haley Kottler, Senior Campaign Director for Kansas Appleseed. “The paperwork requirements appear to be overwhelming not only for our neighbors who are struggling to feed their families, but DCF as well. We can not let red tape keep kids, seniors, and families from getting the critical nutrition they need.”
We are urging the Department for Children and Families (DCF) to take every available step to immediately address processing delays and ensure eligible Kansans receive the timely benefits they need to put food on the table. State and federal leaders must also ensure that DCF has the resources and flexibility needed to implement H.R. 1 without eligible Kansans losing access to food assistance due to administrative delays.
