Water is my therapy. And I mean that quite literally.

Living with scoliosis and chronic pain means that some days my body feels amazing, and other days even the simplest activities can be challenging.

But there’s one place where I can almost always find relief. 💙

The water.

Whether I’m swimming in the ocean, floating on my back, or paddleboarding, something shifts.

My spine feels lighter. My muscles relax. My nervous system settles. And sometimes, pain that was an 8 or 9 out of 10 becomes a ZERO.

Water gives my body something that gravity often doesn’t — a sense of freedom.

I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to live near the ocean. It hasn’t always been easy, but when something brings you this much relief and joy, you find a way to make it part of your life.

And while water isn’t a cure for scoliosis or chronic pain, for me, it’s one of the most powerful tools I’ve found.

💙 What’s YOUR therapy? What’s the one thing that helps you feel better physically, mentally, or emotionally?

✨ I thought it was time to introduce myself, Scolio-Pilates®, and the work I do!

For those of you who are new here, I’m Jenna! I’m an authorized Scolio-Pilates® Practitioner, Pilates instructor, and orthopedic manual therapist based in Encinitas, California.

I’ve spent over 20 years working in the movement and healing arts, and 15 years teaching Pilates, helping people move better, feel stronger, and navigate complex conditions and chronic pain.

But my work is also deeply personal. 💙

I’ve lived with scoliosis since I was 14, and I know firsthand that living with a curved spine isn’t just about the physical challenges. There’s an emotional journey that comes with it, too.

My own experiences have shaped the way I work with clients with compassion, curiosity, and an understanding that no two spines (or people!) are alike.

Through Scolio-Pilates®, I help people better understand their unique spinal curves and develop tools to improve alignment, stability, strength, and confidence in their bodies.

🌿 Here’s how we can work together:
✨ Private Scolio-Pilates® sessions in Encinitas, CA
✨ Online private sessions from anywhere
✨ Weekly online Scolio-Pilates® group classes
✨ Therapeutic Pilates and orthopedic manual therapy

My goal is to help you feel more comfortable, supported, and empowered in your body!

I’m so glad you’re here! 💙

Here’s me with a 59 degree curve hiking 12 miles up a 10,000 foot peak. 💙

Here’s 6 things I’ve learned about Scoliosis that I wish I knew sooner:

1️⃣ Surround yourself with supportive people.

Be mindful of the information and opinions you expose yourself to. If Facebook groups, friends, family, or healthcare providers constantly leave you feeling fearful or hopeless, it’s okay to step away. Living with scoliosis already carries enough uncertainty. You don’t need more fear and negativity.

2️⃣ Find practitioners who understand the emotional side of scoliosis.

Scoliosis isn’t just about Cobb angles and X-rays. It’s about fear, uncertainty, body image, chronic pain, and wondering what the future holds. Find practitioners who listen with compassion and see the whole person, not just the spine.

3️⃣ Your scoliosis doesn’t mean you’re destined for a life of pain.

Research shows that the relationship between scoliosis and back pain is complex. Many people with significant curves experience little or no pain, and people without scoliosis experience back pain, too.

Your X-ray doesn’t predict your future.

4️⃣ Don’t let someone else’s experience become your expectation.

Just because someone with a similar curve needed surgery or experiences debilitating pain doesn’t mean you will. Every spine, nervous system, and personal experience is different.

5️⃣ You don’t have to figure everything out today.

Should I have surgery? Should I wait? Am I doing enough? Gather information, ask questions, and seek qualified opinions. But remember, you don’t have to solve your entire future today.

6️⃣ Keep doing the things that make you feel alive.

For me, that’s swimming in the ocean, dancing, and spending time in nature. Pain and fear can consume so much of our attention that we forget what our bodies are still capable of.

You can acknowledge that living with scoliosis is hard without believing your future is hopeless.

What’s one thing you wish someone had told you when you were first diagnosed with scoliosis?

Why Vital Flow? 🌊

I chose the name Vital Flow Movement & Wellness because flow has always had a deeper meaning for me.

There’s the flow state or that place where you become completely absorbed in what you’re doing and everything else seems to fall away. I’ve experienced that through dance, movement, and especially the ocean. Being near or in the water has always helped me find that sense of flow, which is one of the reasons living near the ocean has become so important to me.

Flow also shows up throughout the work I’ve been drawn to over the past 20+ years.

In the Hendrickson Method of orthopedic manual therapy, one of the foundational techniques is called wave mobilization—a gentle, rhythmic movement intended to work with the fluid nature of the body rather than forcing against it. My work in craniosacral therapy also introduced me to a subtle, fluid-oriented way of listening to and working with the body.

And then there is movement itself.

Through Pilates, Scolio-Pilates®, therapeutic movement, dance, and manual therapy, I’ve learned that our bodies are constantly adapting. Especially with scoliosis, hypermobility, injury, or chronic pain, the goal isn’t necessarily to make the body perfectly straight or symmetrical. It’s to help it find better options for movement, support, strength, and ease.

Vital represents life, energy, and resilience.
Flow represents movement, water, adaptability, and that feeling of being fully present in your body.

Even my logo reflects this, the curves of the spine flowing into waves. 🌊

So Vital Flow isn’t just a business name. It brings together so many threads of my own life and the work I’ve spent decades studying.

Helping people find more freedom, ease, and flow in the bodies they have. 💙

What an incredible show this weekend-Movement Mystics at CSUSM with coreography and director Vika S. Hernández 🦋 of Sambamerica Dance & Drum Collective 🫶

And I’m so grateful I can still perform. ❤️

After everything my body has been through, there is something incredibly meaningful about stepping onto a stage and realizing that I can still dance.

Living with scoliosis has made me appreciate movement in a completely different way. I don’t take these moments for granted anymore.

My body may not always move the way it once did. Some days are hard. But then there are nights like this, when the music starts, I step onto the stage, and my body remembers.

I can still dance.
I can still perform.
I can still do something I’ve loved for most of my life.

And for that, I am deeply grateful. 💙

Will I need surgery one day for my scoliosis?

Maybe.

But my diagnosis didn’t get to decide who I became.

I decided.

And that little girl who was told she needed major spine surgery grew up to become a professional dancer.

A Pilates teacher.

A wellness coach.

A backpacker.

A hiker.

A paddleboarder.

A swimmer.

A woman who refused to let a diagnosis determine what was possible.

My diagnosis became part of my story.

It never became my identity.

Because the stories we tell about our bodies shape who we become.

So let me ask you:

What story are you telling yourself about your body?

And is it helping you become the person you want to be?

One of my clients recently told me:
“You taught me to breathe.”

And honestly… that touched me deeply.

Because when the body is stuck in pain, tension, stress, or survival mode, we often stop breathing fully without even realizing it.

And sometimes healing begins with something incredibly simple like creating enough safety, space, and support for the breath to return.

A small shift in the body can create a huge shift in how we feel.

This is why I love the work I do.
Not just helping people move better… but helping them feel more at home in their bodies again.

Your body already produces hormones that regulate hunger and fat loss…

But chronic stress + inflammation can block them.

When you support your body instead of restricting it:

✔️ Hunger regulates
✔️ Cravings decrease
✔️ Fat loss becomes easier
✔️ Pain often improves

This is why I focus on an anti-inflammatory approach, not extreme dieting.

Most people think Pilates is just a workout. But for many of my clients, it becomes a path back to living with less pain, better posture, more confidence, and a body that feels supported again. 💛

I work with clients in Encinitas at Pilates & Beyond, where I specialize in therapeutic Pilates and corrective movement — with a special passion for helping people with scoliosis.

I’m also currently on the path to becoming a fully certified Scolio-Pilates instructor by the end of this year, deepening my ability to help clients with scoliosis through specialized, evidence-informed movement strategies.

With scoliosis, generic exercise often isn’t enough. Every curve pattern is different, which means your movement approach should be too.

That’s where I come in.

I help clients learn how to:

✔️ Decompress and create more space in the spine
✔️ Improve posture and alignment
✔️ Build core strength that truly supports the curve
✔️ Use breathwork to expand restricted areas
✔️ Reduce tension patterns and pain
✔️ Move with more ease and confidence

Whether you’ve just been diagnosed, have lived with scoliosis for years, or feel frustrated that nothing has truly helped, there are often more options than you’ve been told.

I believe your body can change, adapt, and become more supported at any age.

If you’re in Encinitas or North County San Diego and want personalized support, I’d love to help.

It’s not that you’re not stretching, it’s that you’re not stretching the right muscles for the real reason you’re in pain!

This short stretch sequence helps release tension through the hips, pelvis, and spine — the areas most responsible for that “tight low back” feeling.

Move slowly, breathe deeply, and notice how even a few minutes can shift how your body feels!
