Thank you for this post: “Usually as researchers we focus on what parents can do to foster their children’s development. We loved how this study turned this idea on its head and looked at how children benefit their fathers.
The results are based on a set of three studies that took slightly different approaches to researching how fathers’ life satisfaction, well-being, and happiness are linked to the time they spend with their kids. The combined total sample across the three studies was more than 18,000 dads (an impressive and enviable sample size!).
Two caveats to note here:
1️⃣ These results are correlational. Fathers who feel less stressed to begin with are more likely to find spending time with their children to be fulfilling.
2️⃣ The families in the studies were heterosexual two-parent families. Although there is a push to include diverse family structures in research, there is still a long way to go!”
