Today's Stretch Saturday focuses on the IlioTibial band also known as the IT band. The IT band is made up of connective tissue which is thick and fibrous and connects 3 different muscles to the outside of your thigh. The band originates on the upper portion of the hip and inserts into the side if your knee. Having a tight IT band can cause IT band syndrome which is the inflammation of the band and usually occurs in cyclists and runners, pain in the knee and stabilization issues. This stretch is especially good for runners and cyclist can be done longer than 15 seconds as long as it doesn't cause pain. My Spine Clinic offers stretching sessions to those that want or in need. If you have any questions or want additional stretches please feel free to ask. Please call us at (818) 646-6167 to schedule an appointment.
