September is Su***de Prevention Month.

No one wants to talk or think about su***de, but not talking about it makes people feel even more isolated when they're dealing with suicidal thoughts.

Su***des are preventable. To help prevent su***de, we need to talk about it. We need to see how big of a problem this really is, and how it's only gotten worse post-pandemic. We need to remember that there are resources to help, whether we're dealing with our own suicidal thoughts or helping someone else.

If you or someone you love is thinking about su***de, please reach out for help. You can call the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline at 988, and it’s available 24/7.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month. It’s important to talk about su***de, because avoiding the topic makes people dealing with thoughts of su***de feel more isolated and less likely to reach out for help. When more of us understand the warning signs and risk factors of su***de and how to talk about it, the easier it is to prevent it.

Responding to suicidal thoughts means we need to know if someone is dealing with suicidal ideation or is actively suicidal.

Suicidal ideation is serious, but it's not a medical emergency the way that active suicidality is. Suicidal ideation is when someone has thoughts of ending their life, with no plan to carry it out. Being actively suicidal, on the other hand, means someone has the means and the plan to end their life, and intends to do so.

Suicidal ideation can occur when a person doesn’t feel capable of coping with an overwhelming situation (such as abuse, financial problems, relationship stress, grief, etc.).

People with a family history of mental health issues, people who feel secluded or lonely, and people without a lot of coping skills for difficult emotions are especially prone to suicidal thoughts. In most cases, someone who is considering su***de views it as the only option to get out of (or avoid) a difficult situation or emotion.

When a marriage survives an affair and partners actually heal from it, the marriage often becomes even better than it was before the affair. For many, the discovery of an affair is the opportunity to reconnect and recommit to their partners.

If partners choose to stay together after infidelity and don’t get the chance to heal, resentment can build. Resentment builds between the partner who was injured and the partner that had the affair.

There are three overall phases that couples must go through to re-establish trust, correct previous errors of disconnection, and strengthen their bond.⠀

Trust is the ability to have faith in someone. Trust is an emotional state of our brain, rather than just a feeling or expectation.

So, how do we maintain trust in our relationships?

There are five components that people need to consistently experience to have trust in another person - honesty, transparency, accountability, proof of alliance, and ethical actions.

In our counseling practice, we work with many couples healing from injuries and growing through them together. Common sources of relationship injury include affairs or other betrayals, not being there for your partner in a time of great need, or when a person has an addiction that repeatedly harms the relationship.

In our experience, healing from injuries or trauma as a couple is not only possible, but can be incredibly deep and beautiful healing. There is no better person than our special one to hold us and comfort us. It is profoundly powerful when two people decide healing is important to them, and they commit to getting help.

The truth is, healing from injuries is a PROCESS, not a light switch. It takes time and consistently safe responses to heal your relationship together.

Wondering how to affair-proof your relationship? Give these suggestions a try:

• Address Emotional Distance Early: Don’t wait until you’re on a jumbotron with tension thick in the air. Talk openly about loneliness, unmet needs, and fears.
• Repair After Missed Moments: When a bid for connection (a touch, a look, a kiss) is rejected, talk about it. What happened in that moment? What was each person feeling?
• Learn How to Respond Softly: Blame and defensiveness escalate disconnection. Emotionally Focused Therapy teaches couples to speak with vulnerability instead: “I feel scared I’m not important to you.”
• Rebuild Rituals of Closeness: Simple acts—greeting each other with intention, daily check-ins, planned moments of touch or affirmation—protect the bond from erosion.

Meet new Thrive Graduate Marriage and Family Therapy Intern James Carmichael, BS! Here’s more about James, in his own words:

“I enjoy working with individuals and couples seeking stronger, more authentic connections. I’m especially drawn to supporting people as they navigate sexuality, intimacy, grief, anxiety, and seasons of uncertainty.

I’m also passionate about working with individuals through the lens of attachment and trauma, and I bring that same curiosity to couples work. If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community, you deserve a space where all of you, and your relationships, are fully welcomed and understood.

Life is too precious to stay stuck in patterns that no longer help you flourish.

Common concerns I work with include:
* Feeling disconnected from a partner or from yourself
* Anxiety and difficulty managing overwhelming emotions
* Grief and loss
* Life transitions and seasons of uncertainty
* Attachment wounds and relational trauma
* Difficulty with intimacy or talking about it
* Sexuality and identity concerns
* Communication and conflict patterns in relationships
* Individual therapy through an EFT and attachment lens
* Couples therapy for individuals and partners

I’m proud to offer an LGBTQ+ affirming space for individuals and couples.”
