July 10, 1863 was third day of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raid through southern Indiana. The day after they captured Corydon, Morgan and his men arrived in Salem, Indiana.

Salem would suffer more destruction from Morgan’s raid than any other town in Indiana. The Confederates looted businesses and burned the town’s railroad depot. Several mill owners paid a $1,000 ransom each (over $25,000 in today’s dollars) to the raiders to spare the their mills from being burned down.

The Confederates continued looting small towns in their path, destroying telegraph wires, bridges and railroad stations along the way. Union General Edward Hobson and his 4,000 troops were in pursuit.
