June is National Aphasia & Dysphagia Awareness Monthβa time to shine a spotlight on two conditions that affect millions but are still widely misunderstood.
π¬ Aphasia is a language disorder that affects a personβs ability to communicate. It can impact speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Aphasia is often caused by brain damageβsuch as from a stroke, head injury, or degenerative diseaseβbut it does not affect intelligence.
π½οΈ Dysphagia refers to swallowing difficulties that may affect a personβs ability to eat or drink safely. Challenges can occur in the mouth, throat, or esophagus, impacting not only mealtime experiences but also nutrition and overall quality of life.
Letβs make June a month of advocacy and spread awareness beyond the therapy roomβbecause understanding starts with us.
