🎨 The Birth Cottage Children’s Art Contest 👶🌿

Several years ago, the child of one of my former clients drew a picture of me helping their family when their baby brother was born, it has remained one of my most prized possessions. Looking at the artwork again inspired me to invite more children to help fill The Birth Cottage with beautiful, meaningful art!

Theme: Welcome to the World

Children of current and former midwifery clients are invited to create artwork celebrating babies, birth, families, midwives, becoming a sibling or welcoming a new baby into the world. They may draw, paint, color, or create a collage. We would love to see what birth and babies look like through their eyes!

🏆 A prize will be awarded in each age group:

• Ages 4 and under
• Ages 5–8
• Ages 9–12
• Ages 13–17

🖼️ All entries will be displayed at The Birth Cottage, with yours and their permission.

Artwork requirements:
• Artwork should be either 5x7, 8 × 10, or 11 × 14 inches
• Portrait or landscape orientation is welcome
• Please submit artwork unframed
• Write the child’s first name and age on the back
• Include the parent’s contact information so we can send prizes!

Deadline: October 10, 2026

Artwork may be dropped off or mailed to:
The Birth Cottage
1108 Washington Avenue
Enumclaw, WA 98022

Mailed entries must be received by October 10.

When I attended her last birth a few years ago, I teared up watching her sister climb into the tub beside her, lovingly support her, and then catch their family’s newest baby. 🥹🤍

This time, even more sisters joined her. It was incredibly moving to witness this beautiful circle of support as they welcomed new life earthside together. ✨🌿

It makes such a difference to be surrounded by truly supportive caregivers during labor. Not people who are simply there to witness or observe someone else giving birth, but those who can set aside their own feelings, become fully present, and immerse themselves in giving loving, unconditional support. 🤲🏽💛

There is something so powerful about sisterhood surrounding birth, and it was an incredible honor to witness this family love and care for one another so beautifully. 🤍✨

I hope my children grow up knowing that asking for help is never something they should feel ashamed of, because I want to be the kind of mother who remembers how exhausting these years can be and refuses to make someone else feel guilty for needing a break. I know how much can pile up in a single day, how badly a mother can need a quiet shower, an uninterrupted nap, or simply a few hours where nobody needs anything from her. When my children become parents themselves, I hope I can look at them with understanding instead of keeping score of everything I once did. I want to make their lives a little softer, hold those babies close, and tell them to go rest because I know exactly what they need. 🥹

Seriously, you never need to feel awkward about coming back with a new partner, a different family structure, or a whole new life story. I had my first baby at 16 and lived through plenty of my own plot twists before having my next. Life happens, relationships change, and families grow in all kinds of ways. I’m here for it, and I’d be honored to care for you again. 🤎

New partner? New baby? Same completely unshocked midwife.

We have been so fortunate to welcome some beautiful daytime babies lately! ☀️

As they see their families’ faces for the first time, they have the sweetest squinty little eyes adjusting to the bright summer sunshine pouring through the windows. 🥹

It has been four years since I first met this beautiful family. I went back and read my notes from our initial consultation to remember what they hoped for:
“To feel like they are not surrounded by people they don’t know, for their baby to be born in an environment that does not feel medicalized, and to experience an unmedicated birth that will help them feel empowered as they enter parenthood.”

The greatest honor is being invited to serve a family more than once. 🤍 Thank you for trusting me and allowing me to share in the most important days of your lives! 🌿
