TODAY’S PRESCRIPTION: USE BOTH HANDS.

When I saw this photo I laughed out loud...because, no, you probably wouldn't think..."hmmm, yeah! Maybe I will rebuild an engine today."

And I am saying, uncharacteristically, let's go for the low bar: the low-hanging fruit:

Just put down the phone and carry both bags of groceries in one trip.

I learned this today after making two trips because it genuinely did not occur to me to release the phone from my hand. When I realized what I had done, I was…disappointed in myself.

So put the phone down. Use both hands for something productive--maybe just baking a loaf of bread, or playing a musical instrument for a few minutes.

Oh. And then pick that phone back up and make an appointment with a naturopathic doctor to learn how small, realistic lifestyle changes can support meaningful improvements in your health.🤣

Today's Prescription for Living Well: Read ten pages from a real book.

(Pssssst: This isn't really about reading.)

It's about attention.

Most of us spend our days moving from one distraction to the next. A text message interrupts an email. A notification interrupts a conversation. Before we know it, we've reached for our phones without even realizing we've done it.

So today's prescription is a little different.

Grab a real book. Better yet, take it outside.

Leave your phone inside, or at least somewhere you can't casually reach it. Then give yourself twenty, gorgeous, uninterrupted minutes.

No scrolling. No checking the weather. No looking something up because you're curious. Just you and the book.

If you find yourself wanting to reach for your phone after two pages, don't be discouraged. Just notice it...and keep reading.

A growing body of research suggests that reducing smartphone distractions can improve sustained attention and support mental well-being. But you don't really need a study to tell you what you'll probably discover for yourself.

It feels good to give your mind one place to land.

Now we're curious...

We keep telling you that health sometimes begins by slowing down—so consider this your official invitation.

Make a cup of cocoa, enjoy those flavanols, ( or in my case, a cup of chai tea with anise) get comfortable, and spend a little time exploring the blog posts within "Why Naturopathic Medicine?"

No miracle promises. No magic fixes. Just a closer look at a thoughtful, science-informed approach to health that asks good questions, considers the whole person, and takes prevention seriously.

Curl up. Read a little. See what you think.

Shame on Governor DeSantis for vetoing a bill that passed the Florida Legislature and would have established responsible licensure and regulation for naturopathic doctors. In doing so, he denied qualified professionals the right to practice and denied Floridians greater freedom to choose the kind of healthcare—and the healthcare provider—that best meets their needs.

Naturopathic medicine isn’t trying to squeeze into someone else’s white coat. We’re not an off-brand version of conventional care—we’re our own lane.

Naturopathic doctors are trained to look deep. To take time. To ask questions. To understand what’s contributing—not just what’s presenting. Our education includes the biomedical sciences and evidence-informed natural therapies—because healing often lives in the space between systems.

We respect all forms of healthcare. And we believe naturopathic medicine fills a gap too many people are falling through.

We’re not trying to be someone else. We’re here to be exactly who we are. That’s the lane we defend.

For someone who spends a lot of time reading and writing about health, I realized I'd never actually asked myself a very simple question:

What is health?
I thought I knew the answer.
It turns out I had examples, but not a definition.
That question led me down a rabbit hole I didn't expect, and I came away with a much richer—and much more hopeful—understanding of what health really is.

I'd love for you to read it.

Prescription for today: Use the good stuff.

Many of us have been taught to save beautiful things for special occasions; the good china, or the expensive tea service.

We wait to drag out the pretty things for guests, holidays, celebrations, and milestones. We wait for a day important enough to deserve them.

But I think life is made of mostly ordinary mornings.
A cup of coffee before work; a simple breakfast.

A moment of sunlight across the kitchen table.

Perhaps beauty was never meant to be reserved for rare occasions. Perhaps it was meant to accompany us through the everyday moments that make up a life.

The Colorado Association of Naturopathic Doctors want to remind you that health is more than the absence of disease. It is also found in gratitude, beauty, connection, joy, purpose, and the small rituals that remind us to slow down and notice what is good.

So today, pull the good dishes out of the cabinet.
The occasion is that you're here.

Before the day is over, find one thing outside that you've never noticed before.
A bird. A flower. A cloud formation.
A tree you've walked past a hundred times.
No app. No goal. No step count.
Just notice it.

We spend a lot of time trying to optimize life and very little time paying attention to it.

Consider this your five-minute prescription for curiosity. That is all. Now. Go do it.
