Thrive Therapy Soace has been such a great place for me to help others on their journey. The Counselor’s Inn!

Scott Boyd is a counselor who has been a member of Thrive since 2020. He has his own private practice and also works at McDowell as a secondary-education guidance counselor. Before becoming a counselor, Scott worked as a juvenile probation officer for 11 years. It was through this job that he realized he'd like to continue supporting young people, but in a different way.

Scott currently enjoys working with adolescents and adults struggling with trauma, anxiety, and OCD. Interestingly, he first became curious about OCD when he was in 11th grade. That year he wrote a paper on the subject. He got an A+ on this paper, and because Scott had not always been the recipient of A+s, this caught the attention of his teacher, and himself. It was then that he realized a career in learning more about the mind, or in helping others, was something he was passionate about.

When asked if there were any people who encouraged or inspired Scott to become a counselor, he said it was actually the juvenile offenders he was working with that inspired him. The kids he oversaw would seek his help and trusted him with their struggles. One girl, in particular, Scott remembers: she was struggling with a traumatic event and came to him for help. He thought "I'm not qualified, but I want to be able to."

This, and similar experiences, eventually led him to pursue a degree in counseling. He graduated from Edinboro University in 2004 with a masters in Secondary school guidance. Since 2005, Scott has been working as a school counselor and will see this career to its finish. In addition, he began his private practice a year ago, called the Counselors Inn.

Scott gave his business this name because he thinks of an "Inn" as a safe place for when you're tired, weary, or struggling with something. He says "I love people's journeys, I want to be a stop along their way... to help them live their best life."

When he retires from his job as a guidance counselor and private practitioner, Scott looks forward to selling all his possessions and riding off into the sunset in his red and white van.

Good luck to you Scott, we are lucky to have you here at Thrive!

It has been a great first month at Thrive Therapy Space, a shared therapy space for me and my colleagues!
I specialize in trauma, grief, anxiety, and phobias. One rapid results approach I use to address your concerns is Eye Movement Integration (EMI). I learned how to effectively apply EMI from Ron Klein.
You may have heard about Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), since we recently read in the news how Prince Harry was using the therapy. EMDR and EMI both have their roots in NLP and both show evidence of quick change and lasting results when it comes to treating trauma, phobias, and anxiety. The major difference between the two approaches is that EMI is experienced as a kinder/gentler approach because it does not require regression into the traumatic past memory, thus risking retraumatizing the individual or the possibility of false memory. In Eye Movement Integration Therapy: The Comprehensive Clinical Guide, Danie Beaulieu, Ph.D., states that EMI™ “ . . . does not extinguish the memory of what happened, but it does strip off the emotional charge that [ . . . causes ] the problems.”
Call for a consultation today. I look forward to meeting you soon!
