How can we support a child with ADHD?
When a teacher or parent notices a child struggling with his/her attention and/or activity levels, the parent should connect with the child’s pediatrician and a local mental health specialist, such as a child counselor or child psychiatrist. Evaluation can help determine a diagnosis and an effective treatment plan to support healthy development and growth. Most children with ADHD thrive best with a combination of behavior therapy and medication.
Making small changes in the classroom, like seating location, support with organization, frequent movement breaks, and pairing oral directions with written directions can help a child with ADHD access learning more productively. Maintaining open lines of communication and working in partnership with outside professionals will help parents and teachers effectively support a child with an ADHD diagnosis.
