The Neurofeedback Advocacy Project To advance our mission, we offer training and ongoing monitoring/evaluation of processes and outcomes to eligible agencies.

Our mission is to make neurofeedback accessible to public agencies, nonprofit organizations, schools, and private clinicians who work with the underserved and most vulnerable. To be eligible, an agency/practice must serve either an underserved or difficult-to-serve population or have at least 80% of clients who are low-income/Medicaid-eligible. What actually happens during an ILF Neurofeedback session? 🧠

ILF Neurofeedback is a non-invasive approach that uses real-time brain feedback to support self-regulation.

A typical session begins with a clinician assessment to better understand the client’s history, concerns, and goals. Four to five small EEG sensors are then placed on the scalp to measure brain activity and guide the feedback process.

During training, clients engage in a familiar activity—such as watching a movie or playing a video game—while the activity changes based on the brain’s performance. This feedback allows the brain to learn through its own natural processes without requiring conscious effort from the client. This experience changes based on the brain’s activity which helps the brain recognize and adapt to patterns of regulation.

Self-regulation plays an important role in how we respond to stress, emotions, attention, sleep, and everyday challenges. ILF Neurofeedback supports the brain’s natural ability to learn, adapt, and develop more effective patterns of regulation.

Because the process is passive and engaging, ILF Neurofeedback can be used with clients across the lifespan, including those who may have difficulty engaging with traditional approaches.

✅Fact Check: Does neurofeedback send electricity into the brain?

The answer is NO.

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technique that does not send electricity into the brain.

Instead, sensors placed on the scalp simply measure the brain's natural electrical activity (EEG). The neurofeedback system uses that information to provide real-time feedback through sounds, visual changes, or tactile cues allowing the brain to recognize and adjust its own activity over time.

This is different from other approaches, such as electrical brain stimulation, which intentionally deliver electrical current to the brain.

Understanding the difference is important because neurofeedback is an observational and learning-based process—not electrical stimulation.

That's why participating agencies and clinicians use our HIPAA-compliant Results Tracking System to measure client progress throughout treatment. Clients track the concerns that matter most to them, while clinicians also collect information about quality of life, behavior, cognition, healthcare use, and more.

Research helps us understand how ILF Neurofeedback works. Real-world outcomes help us understand how it's making a difference for clients in everyday clinical practice. Together, they provide a stronger picture of treatment effectiveness.
