Take care of your self.

Now read it again and emphasize a different word.

One of the trickiest parts about being a therapist (especially as a person in a marginalized population) is engaging in community in a way that both protects clients from being invaded by my "knows everything about you" presence and protects clients from feeling like they're invading my community space. Sometimes its just inevitable.
So in the interest of protecting us all from any unwanted discomfort or invasions I'm sharing this fun news directly and with lots of disclaimers. I'm very excited to be having a book signing this weekend at Augustas Book Tavern. So if you'd like to avoid running into me, please avoid them. If you are interested in reading a memoir about religious deconstruction and coming out, you're absolutely free to do so. Before you do, consider if it might impact you negatively to know personal details, if you're at all worried, don't do it. Additionally, my book is neither therapeutic, nor self-help, nor advice giving, so dont even try to take it as such.
All that aside, I encourage you to do things that scare you because its quite a thrill!
Love to all of you.

Self depreciation is as destructive to a relationship as being critical of each other. Resorting to phrases like "i guess I can't do anything right," or "im just a screw up." side-step important elements like accountability and care for your partner.

The truth is we all suck, and we all create discomfort for our partner's somehow. You dont have to beat yourself up about it. When we hurt them, scare them, or frustrate and annoy them it should matter to us. If it's something we can change, we should. If we aren't sure we can, we should try and then apologize when we fail. If it's something we can't change we should be honest about that, and still acknowledge that it makes things harder for them.

Every person who walks into therapy needs a different solution. Be wary of any online influencer therapist who paints broad strokes and gives broad solutions.

If you want a person to share their heart with you, you have to come to the conversation in three ways, curiously, nonjudgmentally and without agenda.

It can be painful to learn you've done something that hurts your partner. Emotionally mature partners accept responsibility for it without trying to defend it, explain it away, shift blame or beat themselves up.

If I had to choose one couples therapy intervention, and it was the only one I could ever use again, I would pick:

"I'm sorry."

If you don't know how to say I'm sorry and mean it, your relationship is doomed.

If you don't want to come to couples therapy, just try giving your partner what I do. It's just one hour of your undivided attention during which you cannot talk about you, cannot criticize, judge, or touch them and aim to make them say the phrase, "omg i feel so much better." I guarantee your relationship will improve.
