How to Balance Late Spring Imbalances According To Ayurveda

Late Spring Imbalances May Bring Lethargy, Heaviness in the Body, Allergies, Low Moods...

Late spring is considered a transitional season where accumulated dampness, heaviness, congestion, and stagnation begin to surface. In Ayurveda - Kapha season, the earth and water elements liquify as the weather warms, which can create physical and emotional sluggishness if the body cannot clear it efficiently. The inconsistent temperature from cool to hot and warm to cold are also challenging to the mind and body. This Spring, I invite you to balance Kapha with Ayurveda body therapies such as nasya (sinus and head treatment), Traditional Silk or natural sponge massage (lymphatic unclogging), and Swedana (Ayurveda herbal steam bath). The treatments make one feel lighter and clear mental fog and lethargy. One treatment or several consecutive days of a variety of treatments called panchakarma can create a profound support, lightness of mind and body, and balance for the coming seasons.

Common Late Spring Imbalances

Physical Signs:
Congestion, allergies, sinus heaviness

Puffy face or water retention

Excess mucus

Fatigue despite sleeping

Brain fog

Slow metabolism

Feeling heavy upon waking

Spring colds

congested lymph

weight gain

Emotional / Mental Signs
Lack of motivation

Grief that feels “stuck”

oversleeping

Mental Fog

Herbal Tea for Reducing Kapha
Boil four cups of water

to a thermos add:

1/2 teaspoon organic tumeric

1/2 teaspoon dry ginger

1 peppercorn

For increased immunity add 1/4 teaspoon holy basil or tulsi

if you have acidity, only use one pinch of ginger and add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint leaves.

For grief, add 1/2 teaspoon of organic dried rose petals

Add the boiled water and let steep for 20 minutes. Sip on throughout the day. You can use a strainer each time you pour a cup. Btw, did you know that turmeric can oxidize pretty quickly and according to my Ayurveda teacher, the late Vaidya Mishra, there’s a whole science to getting the most out of taking turmeric, taking turmeric pills are very drying to the system, there can be side effects. I have been using many different brands of turmeric and I find that chandika has the highest and freshest quality and it makes a huge difference in feeling the benefits from it such reduction of inflammation, mental clarity etc. You can order and read about it here here https://www.chandika.com/organic-turmeric-powder/?afmc=qb

Lighter Diet
AVOID or Reduce

excess dairy

cold food and beverage

excess heavy wheat

fried foods

too much sweet taste

eating after 7:00 pm

Better choices:

barley

millet

mung soup

bitter greens

asparagus

ginger

black pepper

turmeric

lentils

light soups

steamed vegetables

Ideally your plate at lunch has three different vegetables for example uch as kale, cauliflower, and broccoli. The vegetables take up three quarters of the plate, then a smaller amount of light grain such as quinoa and lentils (1/4 cup).

A big shout out to artist and Ayurveda health educator, Karen Stewart. Karen who did an above and beyond Capstone Project with my online Ayurveda Certificate Program by using her amazing artistry to demonstrate her in depth understanding of the five elements, the six tastes, and the 7 dhatus, and other concepts of Ayurveda expressed through a variety of paintings and embroideries of the 7 Dhatus (tissues) see below. I am really blown away of the details and beauty. Seeing the doshas and Dhatus gives my understanding a whole new perspectives taking it out of abstract thoughts to grounded beautiful concrete visuals of the subtle physiology of all the five elements - space, air, earth, water, fire and beyond. I am truly inspired by this work, congratulations Karen. These art pieces are displayed in a gallery near Green Bay I believe. Her other amazing painting can be viewed on her website karensorensonstewart.com Feel free to share!
