How loud is your workplace?

Maddie, a first-year audiology student at Northwestern, is sharing a quick reminder about protecting your hearing on the job. OSHA recommends hearing protection for workers exposed to noise levels of 85 decibels or higher over an 8-hour workday. Some workplaces can reach 95-100 decibels, which may put your hearing at risk over time.

Healthy hearing habits today can help protect your hearing for years to come. If you work in a noisy environment, make hearing protection part of your daily routine.

June is National Aphasia Awareness Month.

Aphasia is a communication disorder that can affect speaking, understanding, reading, and writing, often following a stroke or brain injury. While communication may change, intelligence, personality, and identity remain.

Many individuals and families live with aphasia without those around them fully understanding what it is or how to help.

We are committed to providing evidence-based care, education, and support for individuals living with communication challenges across the lifespan.

This month, we invite our community to learn, listen, and help raise awareness.

Community Impact in Action 💜

On May 19, Belma, Karen, and Sarah led a workshop on communicating with clients with aphasia as part of NUCASLL's continuing partnership with Uptown Advocates, a network of community support organizations serving Chicago residents.

This 1.5-hour Zoom session was the second in an ongoing workshop series designed to help community professionals navigate communication challenges they may encounter while providing essential services. Attendees included social workers, librarians, and case workers.

Participants received customized resources and low-tech AAC materials to support communication with their clients. Four Northwestern MS-SLP second-year graduate students also attended, gaining valuable experience in community outreach and learning how speech-language pathologists can partner with professionals serving underserved populations.

Thank you to Uptown Advocates and all who participated in this important collaboration.

It can be difficult to know where to begin when it comes to communication concerns.

Audiologists focus on hearing and how sound is processed, while speech-language pathologists support speech, language, and communication.

Both play important roles, and in some cases, individuals may benefit from support in both areas.

Understanding the difference can help you make more informed decisions about care.

If you have concerns or are unsure which path is right, guidance and support are available to help you take the next step with confidence.
