At some point it's nice to realize we have permission to like ourselves, for who we are and for how uniquely and beautifully we are made.
Chronic self-criticism activates the same threat circuitry that responds to real danger, keeping your body in a low-level defensive state. Your mind can't fully relax around itself if it's always scanning for the next flaw to correct. π§
Self-compassion research, much of it from psychologist Kristin Neff, shows the opposite pathway. Treating yourself with the same warmth you'd offer a friend activates soothing, affiliative circuitry, the same network involved in feeling safe and cared for by another person. You can actually be your own source of that safety.
This still leaves plenty of room for growth. It just means your mind needs somewhere to land besides "not there yet." You're allowed to be proud of who you are right now, not just who you're becoming.
Try this today. Notice one thing about yourself worth enjoying, not improving. ποΈ
