Agitation. Resistance. Anger. Refusing care.
These behaviors are often treated as the problem—but sometimes they’re actually a symptom.

One of the first questions to ask: Could this person be in pain?
Many people living with dementia also have arthritis, old injuries, neuropathy, or other chronic conditions that cause discomfort—but they may no longer be able to clearly communicate what hurts.

Pain can show up as:
• Agitation or restlessness
• Refusing to bathe, dress, or move
• Calling out or becoming combative
• Increased confusion or withdrawal

Before assuming the issue is “dementia,” first consider whether the person may be hurting. Understanding the cause changes the response—and can make life better for everyone involved.

Not sure what you’re seeing? Could it be dementia? You don’t have to figure it out alone.

When behaviors begin to change, it’s hard to know if it's
normal aging or something more? Waiting too long often leads to more stress, more confusion, and fewer options.

A focused conversation with someone experienced in dementia care can help you:
• Understand what’s happening
• Avoid common missteps
• Take the right next steps with confidence

Tam Cummings offers one-on-one consultations designed to help families make sense of what they’re seeing—and what to do next. Schedule here:

Dementia Care Tip: Small changes that make a big difference at home

Dementia care isn’t always about major interventions. Often, it’s small adjustments:
• Simplifying routines
• Reducing noise and clutter
• Using visual cues (labels, signs)
• Keeping a consistent daily rhythm

These changes can significantly reduce confusion, anxiety, and behavioral challenges. The environment can either support the brain—or overwhelm it.

Arguing doesn’t work in dementia care.

If a loved one insists on something that isn’t true, your instinct may be to correct them. But with dementia, logic doesn’t work well anymore.

What helps instead:
• Redirect the conversation
• Acknowledge the feeling (not the facts)
• Keep responses calm and simple

Take this approach and you’ll be communicating in a way that calms and makes the journey easier.

Better communication strategies reduce stress for everyone involved.

When “forgetfulness” becomes something more

Everyone forgets things. That’s normal.

But early dementia often looks different:
• Repeating the same question within minutes
• Getting lost in familiar places
• Struggling to follow conversations
• Changes in judgment or decision-making

It’s not just memory—it’s how the brain processes everyday life.
The earlier you recognize the signs, the more options you have to respond effectively.

Could this be dementia?
People change over time—but dementia can bring sudden or unusual shifts in personality:
• Increased anxiety, suspicion, or fear
• Irritability or withdrawal
• Loss of interest in activities

Often, these changes are most noticeable to close family members.
If someone seems like a different version of themselves without a clear reason, it’s worth exploring further.

Could this be dementia?
Poor decisions happen.
But dementia can affect judgment in noticeable ways:

• Giving away money or falling for scams
• Neglecting personal hygiene
• Making choices that seem out of character

This isn’t just a one-time lapse—it’s a shift in how decisions are made. When judgment changes, it can impact safety, finances, and independence.
