π TRUFFLE DOGS ARE REAL SCIENTISTS (sort of)
During COVID lockdown, mycologist Benjamin Lemmond couldn't get to his lab β so his supervisor dropped off boxes of truffle specimens collected by foragers. One specimen, long labeled as a European species, turned out to be something entirely new. DNA sequencing proved it: a new species, hiding in plain sight.
That's how Tuber canirevelatum was described β by a scientist, a microscope, and a network of citizen foragers and their dogs.
He speaks at PSMS tomorrow (Tuesday) 7:15 PM. Free, in-person + Zoom. ππ
