For families of autistic kids, a move is more than logistics. Packing, new sounds, strangers in the house, and a totally unfamiliar environment can add up to real sensory and emotional overload, even when the move itself is a good thing for the family.

The good news: with the right preparation, most kids adjust well, and any regression that shows up tends to resolve within a few weeks.

Virtual care changes what a move means for continuity, too. There's no new waiting room to find and no new provider to get used to. As long as the new home is within the areas we serve, sessions pick up right where they left off.

A two-mile hike shouldn't feel like wilderness navigation. But for Sarah Kernion and her son Mack, who has profound, non-speaking autism, it does.

For other families they pass on the trail, it's nothing — a step to the side, a quick hello. For her family it's a different kind of moment: Is he too close to the water? Will the bike startle him? Will he keep walking?

And he did. Headphones on, working hard, staying close to her the whole way.

To anyone passing, it looked like nothing happened. Sarah knew everything had.

That's the thing about small wins. They're not a consolation prize, and they're not about pretending the hard parts away. They're proof of years of effort, and they let you tell the truth and still see your child growing.

We asked Dr. Nancy Langdon, licensed clinical psychologist and VP of Avela Health's Clinical Services, what she wishes every parent considering an autism evaluation for their child knew.

Her answer: you are the world's leading expert on your child. You already have years of watching, noticing, keeping track of the small stuff. That counts for a lot more than people give it credit for.

So if something feels off, don't talk yourself out of it. It doesn't mean something's wrong. It just means your kid deserves to be really understood.

The tension you carry isn't a personal failure.

It's what happens when your nervous system becomes the stabilizing force in someone else's world.

Profound autism mom, advocate, and speaker Sarah said it best: "Caregiving at this level isn't a logistical challenge. It's a nervous system experience, and the cost is rarely named."

Sarah lives this. When her child can't regulate, her body becomes the anchor. She dims lights. She slows her voice. She reads cues most people would never notice. She scans for shifts even during the calm moments, because she's learned that calm doesn't always mean it's over.

She describes it simply: never fully relaxing. Her brain continuously scanning for the next shift in regulation. Not because she's anxious. Because her nervous system adapted to sustained unpredictability. This hyper vigilance is physiological.

What Sarah has learned is that "take a break" doesn't reach the real problem. The strain isn't emotional. It's in the body. So the repair has to start there too.

What actually helps her:
• Grounding the body. Feet on the floor. Cold air. Naming what she sees around her. Sending the signal that the world is bigger than this moment.

• Extending the exhale. Inhale for four, exhale for six. The parasympathetic system follows the breath. It sounds simple, but it's one of the few things that actually interrupts the loop.

• Eight minutes of being truly heard. Not advice. Not problem-solving. Just someone listening. Sarah says that alone can change the whole day.
