Richard B. Mezquita
Feb. 13, 1939- Sept. 19, 2021
Son of Bernabe and Eliza Hazel Mezquita of Marblehead, Mass. Dick attended the Marblehead School system and Brewster Academy, where he was a 3 sport athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball. Dick then attended the University of New Hampshire and played football all four years, captaining the team during his senior season. He went on to continue his education at Keene State & completed his Masters from Fitchburg State.
Dick was a football coach/teacher at Franklin High School and Kingswood Regional High school where he developed their football program before moving to Milford to continue his coaching/teaching career.
In his later years he was the Principal at Timberlane Regional High School for 10 years before moving to SAU 9 in North Conway.
Dick was very active in New Hampshire athletics. He was president of the NHIAA and was involved with the UNH 100 Club. In addition, he coached the NH Shrine game twice and was inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame for football as well as the Marblehead Hall of Fame.
Dick is survived by his wife Mary of 60 years and their five children, Lynne Paradis, Scott (Anne) Mezquita, Carrie (Patrick) McDonough, Brad (Karen) Mezquita, Matthew Mezquita and Heather Goldsmith (predeceased). He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
A private ceremony for immediate family will be held in Marblehead, MA. A Celebration of Life will be held at DiBurro’s in Haverhill, Massachusetts on October 17th from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in Dick’s memory to UNH Football through unh.edu/give/athletics.
