Saturday morning continuing education. brought up Zoom on my big TV so I’m sitting here with Jackson my new foster dog and coffee and of course the four other dogs at my house…the 23 year old human is in the basement.

LARGE feedings last week! When i discuss milk volumes and the numbers with my clients it’s what the babies have taught me. what I actually learned about feeding volumes isn’t what I’m seeing in the real world so I had to just let the babies teach me. I’ve picked up on many predictable patterns over the years by watching babies and letting them teach me. This is why I love my scale. This is how I figured a lot out. This is how I can help babies that need to be supplemented if Mom has a low supply. When babies are allowed to drive the feedings, I do not see much difference between breast or bottle. Babies are hardwired for feeding and there are very predictable patterns if we let babies be babies and pay attention.

a follow up from my last video. feeding and pumping is about volume not time. this client had a huge milk supply show up and the baby is removing milk really well. I work with a lot a lot a lot of under supply so a care plan for under supply is completely different. This case is when milk shows up really really well and the baby can remove it really really well.

no neosporin! I learned this many years ago. If you were given "triple ni**le ointment" at some point, that ointment is 1-antifungal 2- antibacterial 3-steroid. Sometimes you have a compounded version. Sometimes your ointment is literally three tubes of over the counter ointments and this is pretty outdated at this point. Steroids are not recommended (I sometimes recommend for blebs). I'm not worried about fungus. So when I have a client with cracked, damanged, bleeding ni**les... I will sometimes say - "let's take things up a notch above ni**le ointment and add antibacterial ointment" and I recommend BACITRACIN - not neosporin. I have small packets in my office. I do not recommend silverettes.

Toddler formula - NOT NEEDED! unless medically indicated of course. I help families with solids introduction and working up on solids and going down on milk. I work with a lot of families that tell me their older baby (8-10 months) is not taking to solids. When I ask how much milk the baby is drinking, wether formula or breast milk - in those cases the milk volume is way too high, this is why the older infant is not taking solids. This is usually with bottle feeding because when babies are at the breast, they manage this on their own. This video is mentioning how toddler formula can impact toddlers eating. I'm seeing this start much earlier - too much milk, no room for solids. So I help the family pull back on milk and that usually fixes the solids issue. If not - we will dig deeper.

thank you ducklings downingtown west 🐥 for inviting me to your open house! your space is beautiful, your team is amazing! i ended up running into my clients! one family that attends Ducklings literally stopped by with mom, dad, three children (that go to ducklings)….to thank me for all of the help i provided for all three children! another i worked with recently, another family i met for the first time…talk about village. Ducklings Downingtown West has (flexible) space available in their infant room…. 6 weeks to 6 months. I let them know i help families make feeding plans for daycare, help transition to solids and wean from bottles. i also picked their brain about bottle refusal!!!
