What do you want your child to gain from stuttering therapy?

07/22/2026

I’ll be completely honest: I have not even mentioned the name of a fluency shaping strategy in my sessions in YEARS.

But this wasn’t always the case.

I used to start by working through the strategies to see which one my client liked best. But guess what??

Even if they liked one, they still rarely used it in a functional situation outside of therapy, rarely felt it was natural, or rarely felt it was helpful.

It sometimes seemed that they were using it or reporting using it just to try to please me in a way? (any SLPs out there feel the same?)

So, what do I do instead?

Some people assume the answer is “radical acceptance” and “talk therapy” and reminders that “it’s okay to stutter”.

And that’s not true.

You can’t force someone into feeling physically safe & comfortable stuttering openly, you have to guide them over the bridge to get there.

There IS still direct, physical practice involved in getting a person to feel comfortable openly stuttering; it just does NOT include strategies with a goal of fluency.

This practice is rooted in openness, vulnerability, and unlearning old patterns, in order to get to authentic, spontaneous, open stuttering.

What do you think of some of these common phrases?

This might ruin your therapy plans, but... an SLP shouldn’t be “pointing out” a child’s stutter every time it happens.

I said it.

If a child hasn’t noticed their stuttering (or even if they have), identifying it as the focus of therapy can create a problem that didn’t exist before.

Our job isn’t to make children aware of every moment they stutter.

It’s to create a space where stuttering is safe to exist.

And how do we do that?

We change what we’re working towards.

💛 This is exactly the kind of perspective shift we make inside the Stutter-Affirming Therapy Academy (STA).

If you’ve ever felt like stuttering therapy is confusing... like you’re constantly wondering if you’re doing the “right” thing... or like the only options you’ve been taught don’t fully align with the clinician you want to be...

STA will completely change the way you think about stuttering therapy.

You’ll leave with:

💛 a framework that helps you make clinical decisions with confidence
💛 an understanding of why you’re doing what you’re doing
💛 feeling equipped to support children and adults who stutter in a way that is evidence-informed, individualized, and affirming.
